Deck Progress and Cards Messed up After Downloading From Anki Web

I was going through my decks and clicked sync and it came up with download from anki web or upload to anki web. I Clicked download from anki web, and my deck progress was lost (due cards went from around 100 to 800) and cards that were unsuspended were no longer unsuspended. Please help!

The Anki apps create automatic backups that you can restore from.

Anki Desktop
File --> Revert to Backup

AnkiDroid
Decks screen, ... menu on the top right, Restore from backup

Anki Mobile
Backups section in the preferences

You will lose any changes you made since the backup and any changes that you made on other devices/AnkiWeb after the last normal sync prior to the backup. You will be asked to do another one-way sync next time you try to sync after restoring from the backup

N.B. Something will have caused Anki to need a one-way sync in the first place (e.g. modifying note types on another device). You will lose these changes if they were made on another device / after the backup you restore from.

thank you for your reply. I am on ANKI desktop on a mac and i Didnt have a backup profile before hitting the sync, so I do not see a revert to backup option. I need a way to get back my cards and progress before the sync. I modified the field of one note on my desktop, which is what casued the download from anki web option to appear

Anki should be creating the backups automatically without you needing to do anything.

I’m afraid I do not have any MacOS devices so I’m going to struggle to guide you.

The MacOS version might not have that button. Another way to do it from the manual:

  • Open Anki, and choose Switch Profile from the File menu.
  • Click on the “Open Backup” button.
  • Select the backup you wish to restore from.

If you can find Restore from Backup/Open Backup and just cannot see any backups make sure you are looking in the right directory.
It looks like it should be this on a mac:

~/Library/Application Support/Anki2/<PROFILE>/backups

(~ is your home directory. It should expand into something like /Users/<USERNAME>)

Not far off in the menu bar:

If you follow rossgb’s instructions you’ll find your automatic backups.

Once you’re restored – the problem is that you’ve got different collections on AnkiWeb and desktop Anki, and you can’t merge those with sync. You’ll have to preserve one of them first, and then you can merge them after syncing. Syncing with AnkiWeb - Anki Manual

That menu option is fairly new, so if the user isn’t updated they won’t see it yet. File > Switch Profile > Open Backup is the method that will work for everybody.
