The latest release does not seem to fix the problem. Recommend staying with 25.02.7.
On 25.09.2, youâll have to close the colour picker by pressing Ok (not Cancel) to save the custom colours
That does not work - the custom colors are blank on reopen.
Can you use About > Help > Copy Debug Info and post the text here?
I now understand the problem - the link to the latest version 25.09 for MacOS installs 25.07 NOT 25.09 even though the filename says 25.09. If, however, you then upgrade from within 25.07 to 25.09 using the Tools>Upgrade launcher then 25.09 installs and the custom colors are now sticky - thanks for the fix but please update the initial download link to avoid confusion!
The website links to the latest launcher release, which installs the latest version by default. If you already have Anki installed, you can update more easily from Tools > Upgrade/Downgrade.
Slight clarification:
It installs the latest version only if you DONâT have Anki already installed. If Anki is already installed (25.07+), it will just start the existing version of Anki.
To update, you have to use Tools -> Upgrade/Downgrade

Upgrading from 25.02.7 to 25.09 via Tools > Upgrade still doesnât work for me. About Anki says version 25.09.2 is installed but the colors disappeared again. Only downgrading to 25.02 brings them back. The initial installation was through homebrew.
The fix in 25.09 will ensure colors get saved in the future, but it wonât be able to recover colors you set in the past.
I verified that the issue is fixed in Anki 25.09.2 on Mac.
Steps to Verify:
- In the Add window, press the âChange Colorâ button to bring up the color picker dialog.
- Click on one of the Custom Colors boxes to select it.
- Select a color (using the color picker UI or by clicking on one of the Basic Colors).
- Press the âAdd to Custom Colorsâ button. Observe that the selected color gets added to the previously-selected Custom Colors box, as expected.
- Press the âOKâ button to close the color picker dialog.
- Quit Anki.
- Restart Anki.
- In the Add window, press the âChange Colorâ button to bring up the color picker dialog.
- Observe that the previously-added custom color is still present in the Custom Colors box, as expected. (The color was saved across Anki sessions, verifying the fix.)
