comes to mind xD
I wonder if the old landing page could be immortalised as old.ankiweb.net
instead of being lost forever, or is the new landing page going to be hosted on github permanently?
Ah, the additional costs. Let’s just say Internet Archive is already doing the job in a way.
It’s a bit early to poll really, this is hardly a final version. The typography, colour scheme and other visual elements aren’t actually finalised. What can be seen currently if anything is a first draft in a open source format where the community can make suggestions or even edit the site as they see fit, something that wasn’t really possible when I was just posting up designs.
There will always be people who refuse software design changes. They are not wrong for preferring the old design, but moving towards modern design principles and open-source development is definitely the right direction. As Jarrett stated, anyone can improve the site.
I think it needs to include screenshots of the entire page to make a fair comparison, the current image shows the new landing page cut off at the top. like this:
Edit:
I think the too dark problem would be better if it auto changes between light and dark mode. Though developers prefer dark mode, the default setting of the laptop is light mode so many Anki users should be using Anki in light mode, so even the normal dark mode should seem too dark for them.
Lmao. I think it’s just nostalgia.
As 25.01 has been released as RC, I would like to give an update. If all of the current pull requests are merged, the site will look like these.
The PRs have been merged, and can now be seen on https://apps2.ankiweb.net/. The ‘2’ will be dropped once we’re ready to go live with the new site. Is there anything people feel must be changed before then, such as a missing link somewhere? Styling tweaks that aren’t essential can always be done in the future.
Just a tiny minor thing: I think a smooth transition between quotes in “Testimonials” would be neat.
I’ve noticed that https://apps2.ankiweb.net/ clashes with a uBlock Origin filter list called Anti-Favicon List by Dandelion Sprout. When the filter list is active, the page is visible for about a second and then disappears to a blank background.
It’s important to note that, although uBlock Origin is a popular extension, only a small subset of visitors would experience this. This is because it doesn’t contain this filter list by default, it must be added manually. To give you an idea, the GitHub repo has 1.6k stars.
Just thought I’d bring this up because I don’t remember it happening to me on any other web page.
PS: I hope you’ll still add a light mode. And I support Shige’s suggestion to auto-switch, with light mode being the default.
PPS: I use a userscript that creates a table of content from a web page’s HTML headlines. You can see it in the below screenshot, in a side-to-side comparison with the opened hamburger menu. On the demo web page, the headline nesting can still be improved; and perhaps a few things should not be made bigger by using HTML headlines but another method which does not cause them to appear in the ToC.
I’m not sure I agree with the tagline “The flashcard application that makes sure you only practice the things you’re about to forget.”
I don’t think it’s accurate to say that Anki only shows you cards that you are about to forget? I think “Powerful, intelligent flash cards” would be better.
It should, especially with FSRS which will likely be the default some day. But there are users that do change a lot of things to make anki behave less “spaced-repetition”-like or at least less effective.
I do think it sounds a little bit weird though. A little bit like hollow advertising slogans that people don’t really believe anyway. I think rephrasing it would be great.
I’m not against it but want to point out that it’s easier to understand what anki is going to help you with if the current tagline is used (i.e. help you efficiently remember things).
For powerusers, anki indeed is “powerful” and considering the advanced algorithms anki is indeed “intelligent”. But I think for the average new user the current tag line is better, as it’s showcasing what anki can do for them.
I really wish we could steal SuperMemo’s “Forget about forgetting”, that is by far my favorite.
Anyway, here are a few suggestions:
I think we should show a link for user support in the hamburger menu. Maybe link people to the forums directly or link them to the manual’s getting help page.
I think if anyone feels particularly strongly about the wording in use, you should either raise an issue on the GitHub repository. I would advise anyone with criticism and suggestions to do this as well. By shifting these conversations into focused discussions on the repository, it’s likely that they can then be tracked and actioned appropriately. I have already got a PR for a tailwind v4 upgrade and I also hope to have a PR for a light theme and light theme toggle in the near future.
There will definitely be a light mode but I would not confidently say it will ready in time for the 25.01 release. As @landingpageguage mentioned, I would suggest implementing it after upgrading Tailwind CSS v4 to avoid extra works due to breaking changes.
I will log these in the GitHub issues.
I’d like to have another go at the site navigation, with desktop and mobile specific navigation. The hamburger menu doesn’t make sense for desktop users, and I’m not happy with the design anyways. I’ll make sure this is incorporated in those changes.
Thanks this is an interesting perspective I hadn’t thought of when using the heading elements. Once the tailwind changes are merged I’m looking to overhaul the typography to be better in line with web standards and typography seen elsewhere. I’ll make sure that the correct elements are in use.
I don’t agree for the following reasons:
Once a light mode is available, those who dislike the darker background can opt for the light theme instead. Once the tailwind upgrade is merged I will also look to create a PR introducing light mode and dark mode, which would incorporate changes to the palette as well.
