Hello, I’ve been using Anki for a couple months for active recall, I know you can do loads with Anki and I’m hardly scratching the surface, I don’t use any of the features apart from the very basics so when trying to research to help myself I did get pretty confused so please explain as if I’m a toddler.
I made several new decks yesterday on my laptop, and went to sync it with Anki iOS on my iPhone, I think I needed to upload to AnkiWeb first, I’m not sure but basically it got rid of all the new cards on my laptop and synced it to the cards I had on AnkiMobile before making any new ones. When I try to revert to one of the backups I get the message:
‘Automatic syncing and backups have been disabled while restoring. To enable them again close the profile or restart Anki.’
I have tried doing what it says, but I still get the same message - any help would be deeply appreciated
I can certainly see why you got confused and the pop-up message can be improved, but basically you’re misinterpreting this sentence.
This is what actually happens.
Anki backs up your collection and syncs it to AnkiWeb on its own at regular intervals.
When you’re restoring from a backup file, say from 2 days ago, the auto-backing-up and auto-syncing stops.
If you notice the backup file doesn’t have what you need, you can select a different backup or a different one.
After you’ve selected the right one, you can restart and auto-backup and auto-sync would start again.
So, the backup-restoration is still working but Anki isn’t backing up and syncing all those old backups you’re trying out. This is basically to prevent a scenario where you restore from a 2 days old backup but turns our it’s actually a 5 year old backup (beacuse you momentarily restored from a 5 year old backup 2 days ago).
