Cannot make an account since email is allegedly already being used?!

Dear Community,

sorry in advance if my English sounds very rusty or if my question has already been asked - I tried looking into it, but I´m quite overwhelmed with this forum and cannot navigate it very well.

ok, now to my question:

I`ve had Anki for about two-ish years now but never actually made an account because, to be honest, I struggle with a little bit of paranoia and feared that the account would end up costing me money I couldn’t spend.
But I have since created quite the amount of cards that I don’t want to lose, so I wanted to overcome my fears (lol) and create a user account to make sure that my cards were safe and could be used on my phone etc. as well.
When I tried to sign up with my email address this afternoon, I was informed, that apparently there is already an existing account linked to MY email address (therefore I couldn’t create the account anymore and only had the option of resetting the password). There is no possibility that I created that account and simply forgot about it. Not only does something like that never happen to me, but I also could not find any emails in my mail account regarding any confirmation of ever creating that apparent account.

What can I do?

As I said, I had the option to reset the password but I don’t exactly feel comfortable in doing that. What if the other person (if they exist) realizes that they cannot get into “their” account anymore and changes the password again? (I honestly don’t get how that would work since I would get an email about someone changing my password; but I don’t understand how someone was able to create an account with my email in the first place, so I guess everything is possible nowadays). Also, changing the password does not exactly explain how something like that could have happened, which I would like to know.

Can anyone please help me solve this problem and answer my questions?

Thank you!!
Fesa

You or maybe someone introducing you to Anki likely created an AnkiWeb account in the past.

As the account does not come with any material benefits or access to other services, it is extremely unlikely that a third party has created the account with malicious intent. This would also require control over your email account to activate the Anki account. There is no risk in using the password reset function.
