Blank screen when trying to study cards

Hi everyone,

I recently got a new laptop and downloaded Anki (25.09.2 version, I hope it’s the most recent). Initially, it worked well. Now when I try to study a deck, I see a blank screen with the ribbon above kind of faded.

But when I click edit, I can see that the card isn’t blank. Can anyone please advise me?

Thank you!

That’s most likely a video driver issue. Try #6 on the Troubleshooting Checklist . If that doesn’t work, try the rest of that list.

Could also be an issue with the templates or the fields. For example html tags that are opened but never closed cause the webview to render blank as the webview doesn’t know how to handle that.

So my recommendation is this:

  1. If your issue occurs on every card (or specific card type) try what Danika_Dakika said.
  2. If that didn’t help, check your templates (or show us the template).
  3. If that doesn’t fix it either (and in that case probably not all cards are affected), check the contents of your fields.

Thank you for responding. I tried what Danika_Dakika said but it didn’t work. Nor did the other items on the troubleshooting checklist. But I noticed that not every card is affected. So like Anon_0000, maybe it’s an issue with the template? If so, how do I check the template and what should I do to fix it?

That seems likely then! There are a few places you can look.

A. On the blank study screen, if you try to select text on the card (double-click, or click-drag), is there anything there?

B. From the blank study screen, click “Browse” to see the note editor and check the HTML view (click < > above the field) of the fields you’re expecting to see on this card. You’re looking for any unexpected formatting, especially related to color or size.

C. Then in the Browse window, click “Cards …” to see the card templates and styling that make this card from that note. In those, you’re also looking for formatting that would make things seem to disappear.

A post was split to a new topic: Blank study screen

After some investigation, I’ve noticed it’s the colour of the text that was causing it to appear blank. Is there a way to change the formatting of all the cards at once or do I have to go about it one-by-one?

Whether you can change it quickly and how easily depends on where it is. There are 3 Styling and formatting places that could be coming from.

  1. The styling for your note type, where classes of formatting can be defined overall for all of the cards, or for specific cards, or specific parts of cards.
  2. The card templates themselves call those classes defined in styling, but they can also contain formatting for specific field replacements.
  3. Formatting in the text of a specific note is controlled in the note editor by the editing toolbar. If there’s a lot of that to remove, Find and Replace might be useful. You might need to open the HTML view (click < > above the field) to see it in the field.

The usual and most efficient places to have that formatting are #1 and #2 – but it won’t matter what you change there if there’s something interfering at #3, which is closest to the text, so it will take precedence over formatting applied at a more distant level. So start down at #3 and work your way up.

Once you figure out what needs to change, if you need more specific help with the HTML or CSS in your templates/Styling, you can post it here – as text (not a screenshot), and in a
```
preformatted-text/code-bloc\k (by putting backticks above/below)
```
– and folks can probably help you with what needs to change.
