Batched MP3 files not playing

Hi I am trying to learn a new language and I found some mp3 recordings that I would like to add to my flashcards. My problem is that I have 200 some flashcards and would like to not have to manually add each one. I labeled each mp3 file as Amharic.Unit.1.# (# just being a number counting up from 1) I was able to create cards that say [sound:amharic.unit.1.#.mp3]. I was also able to put all of the mp3 files into the collection media folder in anki. The problem is that even when I reopen anki none of the recordings play. Is there something I’m missing? Or an easier way to do this?

Thanks

What exactly does that mean? They don’t play automatically? Or they don’t play if you press on the play button?

What does Check Media show? See Media - Anki Manual.

and
[sound:amharic.unit.1.1.mp3]
Perhaps some operating systems require precise capitalization or lowercase?
But in Windows, both work for me.

  1. Do you have multiple profiles on your computer? If so, did you put them in the correct one?

  2. After manually adding them, did you run Tools > Check Media – https://docs.ankiweb.net/media.html#manually-adding-media?

Expanding on Anon’s questions –

It helps to know what is happening instead.

  1. Is there a play button on your cards?

  2. If not, what field did you put the [sound:...] tag in? Is that field included on your card templates?

Thanks for your help!

  1. I ran a check media and it looks like all of the mp3 files are “The following files were found in the media folder, but do not appear to be used on any cards”
  2. The file name is: Amharic.Unit.1.26 I have this saved as [sound:Amharic.Unit.1.26.mp3] in Anki and I have this in a 3rd field titled “Sound”. (I am running windows version)
  3. What’s weird is that the words don’t show up when I preview a card, but there is no play button either. If I manually add one, then a play button will appear and everything will be fine.
  4. Do I need to add a tag to it or is it enough being in the field with the proper syntax?

Again, thanks for the help. It has taken me like 6 hours to figure out how to batch this all in, but I was just completely lost as to why this was happening.

That’s a good sign! Are you sure that [sound:Amharic.Unit.1.26.mp3] is the exact text in that field? It doesn’t have internal spaces or internal (hidden) HTML? Click < > to see the underlying HTML.

Is that – if you manually add one of these files to that field – like by drag-drop or using the paperclip? Compare what you get in the field (in the underlying HTML) from doing that, with what you get in the field from your bulk import process.

I don’t know if you mean a note-level tag (which you don’t need), an HTML tag (which you don’t need), or the “sound” tag (which you need, but already have).

I really appreciate how through you are and responding quickly. I did everything you said. While I was looking through the HTML, I looked in the HTML of the card type. I found out that the new card type that I created did not have the HTML of the sound field on the back. So basically the sound wasn’t showing because the card was set up not to show it :man_facepalming: . I appreciate your help! Thank you!
