AwesomeTTS add-on is not working

Hello! This add-on AwesomeTTS - Add speech to your flashcards - AnkiWeb is not working in Anki on my computer but it works in AnkiWeb. I watched a tutorial on how to use it and did the same but this problem occured. Can you please help me?

What is not working?

When you’re answering ferophila’s excellent question – also answer:

  1. Was the tutorial you watched the official tutorial, or someone else’s guide?
  2. Are you using audio files that AwesomeTTS generated in advance (“collection audio” or “batch generation”)? Or TTS reading (“realtime” or “on the fly”)?
  3. Is it working on AnkiWeb in the browser on the same computer where it is not working in Anki Desktop – or on a different device?

There are no audio files. They work only on AnkiWeb page.

  1. It was this girl’s guide: youtu.be/ckJM1fio0uQ?si=Aw2PbNVtsSlHBhKY
  2. I don’t know, I just turned on ‘Generate using Google Translate’ like in the video above.
  3. On the same computer, yes.

(1) It’s always a good idea to look at the actual tutorial from the developer. You can find through Tools > Add-ons > View Add-on Page. For instance, that video instructed you to add the sound file to the same field as the text. That is generally not a good idea, and might cause you problems down the road (although I don’t think it’s causing your issue now).

(2) If you followed all of the steps, you’re using audio files generated in advance.

(3) Does that mean when you look at your note in the browse window, you don’t see the [sound:____.mp3] tag in one of your fields? Or does that mean when you Preview or study the card, you don’t see the “Play” :arrow_forward: button on your card? Or something else?

(4) Do you sync any other devices with your AnkiWeb account? Does the audio work on those devices?

(5) Run Tools > Check Media on Anki Desktop. Are any files missing?

  1. Thank you.
  2. I see, thanks.
  3. Yes, that means that I see [sound:____.mp3] in the Back field when I browse the List window, but I don’t see the audio file when I study the card. All I see is a written word.
  4. I tried using my phone. The same problem arises.
  5. Yes, missing: 10 files.

(3) Is the word the same word that is in the Back field together with that sound tag?

That means the field is being correctly displayed on the card. It’s possible you might have a combination of 2 settings that make this look like it is not working. Check on these:

But if that wasn’t the solution –

(5) Are any of those 10 files the ones that you’re having trouble with right now?

(6) Are you using a simple/default note type and card templates, or do you have custom templates?

(3) Yes, the word is the same.
Checked that, didn’t work.
(5) I think those are the files which I deleted from another deck.
(6) I guess default because I didn’t change anything.
I reinstalled AwesomeTTS but audios are still not working. A true mistery.
Danika, thank you very much! You provided me with a lot of help.
I think I’ll just work in a web version and use Anki Desktop only for typing in the words.

(3) What are those set to? Did you check the Deck Options for the deck the card is actually in or for a parent deck you click to study?

Have you tried?
(a) in the card Preview, clicking “Replay Audio”
(b) in the study screen, clicking More > Replay Audio

(6) I don’t think the issue lies with AwesomeTTS. It is creating files that have sound in them, and putting them in the right place. You can tell all of that because it works on AnkiWeb. There must be another setting or styling that Desktop and your phone app are paying attention to, but AnkiWeb is ignoring (or vice versa). If it’s not the audio settings above. Let’s take a look at your card templates and styling (if they are longer than a few lines, please post them in a code block, instead of screenshots).
