Automatically buried sibling cards staying inactive forever

Hello, I am using Anki to learn a language and I am currently having issues with some of my cards. About one month ago, I created an Image Occlusion note (the built-in “Image Occlusion” note type) where I am studying an entire table for a grammar topic with 32 cards. Unfortunately, some of them seem to be inactivate and don’t show up anymore. About 10 of them showed up as one new card each, every day. The 11th card showed up a few days ago. But the rest never came up and seem to be remaining as cards that are new, but have been buried.

I would have thought that I can manually unbury them, however none of the cards of this note are displayed as buried in the browser. They are just shown as new, in the column “Due” it just says “New #1896623”. If I search for “is:buried”, there aren’t any cards at all. I then tried to manually suspend and then unsuspend all cards of the note, but that didn’t change anything either.

If I open the studying screen using Anki Desktop, it indicates that there are buried cards. I don’t have any other new cards currently, so the buffer of 10 cards must be them:

As you can see below, burying new card siblings is enabled, while the other burying options are not.

I am using Anki as a desktop app on my computer as well as AnkiDroid on Android. The decks I am using are synced using my default AnkiWeb account. I usually only study on AnkiDroid and simply sync from AnkiWeb. I use the latest versions of both AnkiDroid and Anki.

Does anyone have any idea what is the problem here? Thanks in advance!

Specifications:

Operating System: Debian 12 (Linux 6.1.0-41-amd64), using XFCE 4.18
Anki version: 25.09 (539054c3)⁩
Python version: 3.13.5 Qt 6.9.1 Chromium 122

Any card can bury new cards when “Bury new siblings” is enabled, this includes review cards[1].

Since you have review cards (and probably will for a while) you should probably disable the burying option, or change the sort order to show new cards first. The latter will show 1 new card from a given note each day.

  1. I had to test this now on AnkiDroid, but it’s true. ↩︎

Thanks for the reply! That makes sense, I didn’t realise that review cards could bury siblings. Is it possible to unbury specific cards without disabling burying in the deck options? I would like to just study them as new cards now. Burying does make sense for learning, it’s just confusing in this case.

You have to finish the reviews first as they keep re-burying the unburied cards.

Alternatively, you can study the new cards in the browser preview and grade them with the “grade now” feature.

Thank you for the help. I disabled burying for siblings and the cards are now showing up as new cards to study.
