Ankis cards disapeared

I´ve been using anki for years and made a lot of new cards. But I have recently discovered, that some of the card I can´t be found in my decks, even if I know exactly which key words have to be on the card. It´s not just that the missing cards are not in the rotation, it´s like I deleted them (which I didn´t). I can be sure of that, because when I export the deck and send it to a friend who opens it in his anki, he can find the missing anki. So the error has to be on my device (windows laptop) or my settings. I tried troubleshooting but the missing cards are still not appearing. If anybody knows how to fix this that would be great!

Check the database.
But maybe they’re just in filtered decks somewhere?

I checked it and the cards can´t be found. And on the other decive the cards are in the decks where they are supposed to be…

  1. Where are you looking for those cards that you’re not seeing them? As in – on what screen? in what part of the app? by looking at a counter or by searching?

  2. Have you tried running Preferences > Check Database? Sometimes that helps hidden things pop up again.

This suggests that your devices aren’t fully in sync.

  1. Do you have good syncing habits – syncing when you open the app on a device, AND when you close/leave the app on that device, every time?

  2. Have you been getting “one-way” sync notifications – that force you to choose between upload and download?

  1. I´m looking in the browse section of my decks. I can´t find them by searching nor by looking through the deck.
  2. Yes, didn´t help
  3. I don´t think that it´s a syncinc problem on my devices, I sync every time and the problem exists on every one of my devices (laptop, phone). The missing cards can only be found on the devices of my friends, who use a different anki account
  4. Sometimes in the past, but not lately.

Thank you for your help!

You said that the cards are missing. But, what about the associated notes? Are they also missing, or are they still there?

(If the cards are missing, but the notes are still there, then perhaps you edited your note types, causing cards to be removed or no longer generated.)

When did you export the deck? Was the export procedure performed sometime before you noticed that the cards were missing from your deck?

(If the export occurred in the past, then what could have happened was: you exported the deck containing all the cards, you then subsequently deleted some cards from your deck and synced the change to all your devices, your friends imported the old exported deck containing all the cards, so now your deck is missing cards but your friends’ decks are not missing any cards.)

Edit: Added: If the export procedure was done after the missing card problem occurred, then that suggests that the cards aren’t actually missing. If the cards are in the exported deck, then that means the cards were in your deck at the time of the export. If this is the case, then perhaps the problem is more of a searching/browsing-related issue.

The notes are also gone. I edite my cards sometimes, f.e. if I think some parts of the card are no longer usefull. But I am not deliting the whole card.

I export my deck once every 1-2 months, but the problem did not just occur since the last exportation. I used every way of searching the cards that I could find online, but without sucess.

Since the notes/cards are no longer in your collection, fixing the issue means getting the missing notes/cards re-added into your collection.

You can check the deletion log to see if there is a record of the notes being deleted. The file and/or its entries can be used to re-import the missing notes/cards back into your collection.

If you still have a copy of the deck you exported, you could look at it to see if it contains the missing cards. Since you have exported decks made every 1-2 months, you could also look at the older export files as well. Doing this might also allow you to discover at what point the notes/cards were deleted. If an exported deck contains the missing notes/cards, then it can be used to re-import them back into your collection.

Since your friends’ decks also contain the missing notes/cards, they also might be able to help you recover the missing notes/cards by exporting them from their decks, so you can re-import them back into yours.

On your desktop, you could look at the list of backup files in chronological order, looking especially at the file sizes. If you see that the file sizes mysteriously decreased at some point, that could indicate when the notes/cards were deleted. If a backup with the missing notes/cards exists, reverting to the backup is another possible fix (though you would also lose review progess doing this, so you probably will want to avoid this option unless necessary).
