Anki cards deleted/missing from multiple created decks

I do not have an ankiweb account and have only been using the anki app on the mac to make my own flashcards. I have noticed that when I view the cards in certain decks in the “Browse” section, many of the cards are missing from the decks, which I remember making.There are cards missing from multiple decks I have made. I have checked all the decks to see if I added them to the incorrect deck but that is not the issue. I also updated the app and again no luck. Since I don’t have an ankiweb account, or use anki on any other devices, I thought I did not need to sync as when I select “Add” after making a card, it would just add straight to the deck and I could view them in the “Browse” section. Does anyone know if these cards are lost and if there’s anything else I could do?

You are right that everything that you create is immediately added to your local database, once you click Add or Save. Syncing to AnkiWeb isn’t necessary. [Although, it looks like you do have an AnkiWeb account now – perhaps you just created it yesterday?]

Your database is backed-up multiple times per day automatically, so if things are actually missing, one option is to restore a backup copy of your collection to find them there. Another option, if you think you accidentally deleted the notes, is to check in the deleted notes log. [For either of those options, it may help you to find the Anki2 data folder where your profile/collection is stored.]

But it’s very unusual for things you add to Anki to simply disappear. Before you go digging, there may be other places you could look.

  1. Run Tools > Check Database. If there are items in your database that have become disconnected, that can make them appear.
  2. Are you sure you’re looking at Browse in Cards mode – as opposed to Notes mode?
  3. Are you sure you’re looking at decks in Browse – as opposed to tags?
  4. Other than looking in your decks, have you also run searches for the text?
  5. If your collection is now fully synced to AnkiWeb, I can take a look through our support access and see if I can help you find anything. Let me know what the cards were about and where you expect to see them.
