Anki only saves cloze card type

My anki deck only saves to the cloze 1 card type. When I add a Basic card and make sure that the card type is Basic, I get the following error message:

You have a cloze note type but have not made any cloze deletions. Proceed?

If I say yes, and then try to change the card type when the card is in the deck, I can set-up cloze —> basic type change, but nothing happens.

The deck seems to be locked into creating only cloze card types.

I tried uninstalling Anki and downloading it again. The problem persists.

How can I fix this?

P.S. If I create a new user profile, then everything works fine. I can create a new deck and new Basic cards in that deck and the new cards work just like a Basic card should.

First, understand the key concepts.

Next, explain more precisely what the problem is:

When I add a Basic card and make sure that the card type is Basic, I get the following error message:

You have a cloze note type but have not made any cloze deletions. Proceed?

Is your “Basic” note type actually a cloze note type, but renamed to “Basic”?

If I say yes, and then try to change the card type when the card is in the deck, I can set-up cloze —> basic type change, but nothing happens.

What do you mean by this? What are the steps you took to “set-up cloze —> basic type change”?

The deck seems to be locked into creating only cloze card types.

Do you mean that the cloze note type is pre-selected every time you try to add a card to this deck? I believe Anki automatically selects the note type of the last note you added to the selected deck.

Here is a screen shot of the card I wish to add:

And here is the what happens when I hit “Add”:

This is the first card in the deck. If I hit yes and then go into deck and click on Browse, this is what I get:

Note that while the card was originally set up as a Basic card type, it is created as a Cloze card type. If further info would be helpful, just let me know.

It looks like this is indeed the problem. Judging by the set of the fields in you screenshot, you have a cloze Note Type named “Basic” in your user profile for some reason. That’s why it generates cloze Card Types, and why creating new profile helps (it makes a fresh set of Note Types with all the defaults).

To fix it in your profile, try going to ToolsManage Note Types and renaming your current “Basic” Note Type. Then click Add → select Add: Basic (not Clone: any of the existing Note Types) → Ok. Use the new “Basic” Note Type to add cards.

I have followed your suggestions and all seems in order now. I haven’t used Anki for a few months but before that saving Basic cards was working ok. I’m not sure how the name “Basic” got associated with a Cloze card type. In any case, thanks kindly for your help!
