Anki Learning Interval Confusion

I need help fixing an issue with my Anki. I haven’t found anything similar in the past but I’m not sure if I’m searching for the right thing.

I am nearing the end of my 1st year of med school. Whenever I go back to old cards, for whatever reason, the learning intervals are absolutely ballistic. I know these cards didn’t have such crazy intervals back when I first did them.

For instance, this card has a 18d, 8.7mo, 12mo interval. That’s crazy! I don’t think I’ve done this card many times.

Any time I go back to old cards I see like 9months 12months 8months 3months, CRAZY high learning steps. I’m afraid that I’m going to have a problem come time for STEP studying cause I don’t want to have to reset ALL my cards when it comes to that, I wish the intervals would just stay the same? Any way I can fix this?

Any help is appreciated.

Here’s another example. These learning steps just seem ridiculous compared to how much I’ve done the card. It’s just been 6 months, but it’s not like it should be maturing if I haven’t touched it.

This page has some details on why Anki has intervals like this when you review a long-overdue card: Due times after a break - Anki FAQs

When people return to their deck after weeks or months of no study, they’re often surprised by the length intervals have grown to. This is because Anki considers the actual time the card was unseen, not just the time it was scheduled for. Thus if the card was scheduled for 5 days but you didn’t study for a month, the next interval will be closer to 60 days than 10 days.

This is a good thing. If you have successfully remembered a card after a one month wait, chances are you’ll remember it again after a longer wait, too.

If you don’t feel you know the material well, just use the “hard” button, which will keep the interval roughly the same as it was before. If your next review of this card is on-time, all the intervals should be more “normal” then.

Or, you can switch to the new FSRS scheduler, which can be a bit smarter about intervals for delayed reviews. But it will still take into account the actual length of time since your last review.

If I switch to FSRS will my >1000 cards that I have learned all reset? I want to use FSRS but I’m scared it’s going to restart me. Or does it just take into account everything I’ve done already?

Thanks for the info btw.

No, it won’t reset.

Yes, it will take your existing review history into account.
