Anki download issues

Hi,

I am having issues with downloading my anki after the new update. It wouldn’t open on my laptop after the update so I tried uninstalling the whole programme and then reinstalling anki. Everytime I try downloading it to desktop/downloads it comes up with an issue saying:

Anki Launcher

  1. Latest Anki (press Enter)

  2. Choose a version

  3. Allow betas: off

  4. Cache downloads: on

  5. Download mirror: off

  6. Uninstall

Checking for updates…
Unable to check for Anki versions. Please check your internet connection.

Error: Failed to run (2): C:\Users\pinku\OneDrive - University of Chichester\Personal\Anki\uv.exe run --no-project --no-config --managed-python --with pip-system-certs,requests[socks] --python 3.13.5 C:\Users\pinku\OneDrive - University of Chichester\Personal\Anki\versions.py: error: Querying Python at C:\Users\pinku\AppData\Roaming\uv\python\cpython-3.13.5-windows-x86_64-none\python.exe returned an invalid response: EOF while parsing a value at line 1 column 0

Press enter to close..

Should be 5) Allow Betas: Off, 6) Cache downloads: on, 7) Download mirror: Off, 8) Uninstall.

Every number I type it comes up with the same message other than uninstalling. After I think I’ve uninstalled it and try installing again it comes up with the options again;

Anki Launcher

  1. Latest Anki (press Enter)

  2. Choose a version

  3. Allow betas: off

  4. Cache downloads: on

  5. Download mirror: off

  6. Uninstall

I’m not really sure what the issue is, I’ve got windows 11 downloaded onto my laptop so unless anki doesn’t support windows 11, I’m not sure what the problem is. I also would upload photos but it seems that I am unable to.

Is there a number I could contact about this issue/things that I could try that maybe I haven’t tried that could solve this? I’m just a bit stuck

I’m not sure if you’re still getting an error, or if you just don’t know what to do at the launcher screen. You commented on another post where someone just didn’t understand the launcher list of options:

– the answer there was simple: just press enter so the launcher can install the current version.

If you’re still getting the Unable to check for Anki versions. Please check your internet connection. error – it means there’s a problem connecting to download the rest of the files it needs. Take a look at what you have – firewall, proxy, VPN – that might be blocking connections.

Okay that’s fine. I have VPN installed so is it worth disabling the VPN for a bit and see if I can install it?

Hi, just tried to disable my vpn and then reinstall it. It still comes up with the same issue

Do you know what I should do? I clicked enter and it came up with that

If you don’t think it’s still an issue with your internet connection –

  1. It looks like the launcher is in a different location this time. Did you move the folder – or did you delete what you had installed and run the launcher EXE you downloaded so you could choose a choose a different installation location?

  2. Can you check which of these locations/files actually exists?

  • C:\Users\pinku\OneDrive - University of Chichester\Personal\Anki\uv.exe
  • C:\Users\pinku\OneDrive - University of Chichester\Personal\Anki\versions.py
  • C:\Users\pinku\OneDrive\Desktop\Anki\uv.exe
  • C:\Users\pinku\OneDrive\Desktop\Anki\versions.py
  • C:\Users\pinku\AppData\Roaming\uv\python\cpython-3.13.5-windows-x86_64-none\python.exe
  1. You can try deleting those Anki directories, and reinstalling the launcher at the default location, with your VPN disabled. Then run the launcher again, still with your VPN disabled.

Hi Danika,

So the files listed all exist. The pinku is my personal one drive, and theuniversity of chichester one is my university one drive. I have tried to remove everything related to anki on my laptop so I can properly try and reinstall it. I disabled my VPN and it now won’t download at all.

The first screenshot I have attached is things that for some reason I am unable to delete but I’m not sure why. I deleted everything else that was related to anki, tried again (with the disabled VPN) and then it showed up with this message (screenshot 2)

That usually means they are still in use (which also seems a likely reason why the launcher-installer can’t write to the file either). Try restarting your computer so you can delete those folders completely.

I should be clear – I’m only suggesting you disable your VPN because you that’s what you said you had tried changing. I don’t know anything about your internet setup – for some VPN-off is necessary, but for others VPN-on would be. It’s all about whatever it takes to connect and download the files.
