Anki updating/error

My anki was coming up with an error so I have tried to update it. I am stuck on the anki launcher black page for over 3 hours. I have tried to press enter and 1 and have gotten no response.

I have then restarted my laptop and have made no progress.

I have also gone into file explorer and pressed on all anki options all of which bring me back to this page.

I am soo worried I have lost all my cards. All help would be greatly appreciated. **

The cards are saved at a separate location. It’s basically impossible that you have lost your cards just because you tried to update. No worries.

  1. Do you remember what error that was?
  2. And on which Anki version you were?
  3. Did you download the latest launcher from https://apps.ankiweb.net/ or did you try to upgrade from the Tools > Update / Downgrade menu? If you didn’t try the latest launcher, try the latest launcher, as it might hang due to beeing outdated.
  4. Have you tried emptying the AnkiProgramFiles folder (see Managing Files - Anki Manual)? IMPORTANT: Do not delete any other Anki folder, like the Anki2 folder, which contains all your cards, media, scheduling ect. (see Managing Files - Anki Manual).

I can’t remember the exact error issue. But I was always able to to close it and start again

Did you try just pressing Enter – without typing anything? Or typing 1 – without the parenthesis – and then pressing Enter?

Hello, i’m having the same issue if anyone can help. Even tried deleting the profiles and cards but it’s still giving me the same error message

If you’re getting an error message – have you searched for other posts about that error message?

You definitely didn’t need to do that. Hopefully you have a way to recover your work.

Hello, I looked into it in the forums and it seems to be an issue with the new launcher that came with v25.07 I believe, something about the new uv.exe system. Anyways I tried downloading an old but still recent version as you suggested on another thread and it works well so I will use this in the meantime.

Here is the error message I got. I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, restarting computer, disabling firewall, antivirus, my universitys proxy ect… just like another user who got the error did and nothing worked. I also searched my program files for Anki but did not find a file named uv.exe

Would you still be able to assis me ? Thank you.

As for my profiles and cards its fine I didnt really use Anki that much but was planning on using it more this semester.

Did you find a versions.py file in your Programs location – Managing Files - Anki Manual ? That seems to be the missing file.

You can also try deleting the %LOCALAPPDATA%\AnkiProgramFiles directory entirely and running the launcher again.
