Sometimes I have problems with Anki on my iPad. It’s a new iPad and there shouldn’t be any problems. But sometimes I push “return“ and nothing happens, I push an arrow key, and nothing happens. These keys work in other apps though, such as Google Keep on my iPad. I re-installed Anki and disabled sync’ing media and things seem to be okay. Are they really ok? Only time can tell. But it sucks that I have an 128GB iPad and I can’t even sync media. Should I get the iPad Air for supposedly better functionality? Or should I just wait for the next update of Anki to get rid of these bugs?
Were do you press those buttons and what do you expect to happen (e.g. open a specific menu ect.)?
I’m assuming you are talking about SSD storage, not RAM. What do you mean by you “can’t even sync media”? What are the exact things you are doing and the exact things that are happening?
Let’s first find out if you actually found a bug. You might have, but it might also be a number of other reasons why it doesn’t work for you. As far as I can tell from the forums (I personally never used apple devices), Anki works great on anything that isn’t ChromiumOS and thus should work fine in ipads as well.
I push “return“ and the arrow keys on the Magic Keyboard and in Anki, it’s where I edit the content of a card, usually the backside. I expect “return” to start a new line and expect the arrow keys to move the cursor up and down (ex. with the up arrow and down arrow.)
I read online that Anki could malfunction if the media files are too numerous or too big. So I disabled sync’ing media and the problem seems to have gone away for now.
But ideally, I’d like to sync media files on my iPad.
I’m not aware of any open issues like that – and I don’t think that’s necessarily the problem you’re having. But let’s at least solve that to start. Have you tried cleaning up your media (since you have more than 1 GB of files in your collection on AnkiWeb)?
[Have you run Check Database lately? – do that first.]
To clean up your media, first you’ll need to enable media syncing again – on all your devices – and get your collection completely in sync across all devices. (If it’s not, then files you don’t need will just keep coming back.) On desktop (it’s easier to manage there), run Tools > Check Media. Do you have a lot of unused files? Delete them. Sync desktop to update the server, and then sync AnkiMobile. You can run Check Media on both devices to make sure they match.
If that doesn’t solve the issues you’re having, we can move on to other ideas.
Keyboard navigation and media files are unlikely to be related. I suggest you first wait to see if the problem you were experiencing crops up again, since it’s not something we’re hearing about from other users. If it does, we’ll then need to experiment to find out what circumstances causes it to occur, such as a problem with a particular card/note.
