After creating new card type, prioritise new cards created over new notes

I have a deck with thousands of pre-made cards, using a custom note type with multiple fields.

Halfway through I got the idea to create a new-card-type for this note type - thus doubling the amount of cards.

When I now take new cards, they come from the notes I have not yet studied, with the two card types interleaved.

I wonder, can anki prioritise all the notes where I already learned the old-card-type, so that I first catch up on the new-card-type?

Presumably, when I now study this deck to completion, the last many of them will be the new-card-type cards generated for notes where I already have studied the old-card-type for.

Hope this makes sense!

Current behaviour:

  • Have a deck with a bunch of cards with one card type called old-card-type
  • Study n of these, such that they are no more in the New Queue
  • Add a new card type called new-card-type
  • When taking new cards, they alternate between new- and old-card-type, showing me only cards from notes I have not yet studied

What I’m looking for:

  • After adding new-card-type
  • Somehow make the new card queue only show me the new-card-type for the notes I’ve already studied, so that I can “catch up”

This is controlled by a few things working together –

  • Your New card gather order – what do you have set for that? You should be looking at the Deck Options for the parent deck you click to study. That will control what applies to your entire study session.
  • The order of your cards in the New-queue. Adding a new card type created a new set of cards, but they are likely in different spots in the New-queue. You may need to use Reposition to get those singleton siblings at the front of the queue. See the 2nd half of the Switching Card Order video – old interface, but all the processes are the same.
