It looks to me that if they add AnkiDroid donations to the official Anki it is going to cause some troublesome problems, perhaps Anki’s ecosystem looks like this:

  • Official Anki:

    • Businesses, donations cannot be accepted.
    • Selling AnkiMobile.
    • They are developing Anki for desktop
    • They are developing AnkiWeb Server

  • AnkiDroid:

    • They are volunteer organization, they don’t sell any products
    • They use the code and server provided by the official Anki for free

So the core or most part of Anki is a business, AnkiDroid is a volunteer group but I think they are the same as third parties (like Anking, Migaku).

Official Anki does not specifically support those third parties or developers, so it looks to me like such a recommendation from Anki for AnkiDroid is not needed. (Official Anki already supports their activities indirectly by making codes or servers available for free, so official Anki can support them with more codes without helping them with money.)

Maybe "apps.ankiweb.net/support/” is a URL only accessible from Anki on the desktop, so I think possibilities like these:

  • Users who donate to AnkiDroid are misled into thinking they have donated to the official Anki.
  • Users will be misled into believing that AnkiDroid is an official Anki and not a volunteer business.
  • Users are misled to assume that AnkiDroid is a business and users wonder if they can use tax deductions for their donations to AnkiDroid.
  • Mislead people into thinking that official Anki is accepting donations. (They say they can’t accept donations because they are a business, so there could be some problems if they are misidentified as accepting donations)

Other, AnkiDroid developers and supporters may not be interested in activities to increase their donations in the first place. E.g. giving users official mugs or other goods in return for donations may increase the amount of donations (perhaps this is possible at opencollective), but they are not doing that.

I think maybe we can link to AnkiDroid’s landing page in the future. That will be much better.
