UTF-8 import error, please help!

Hi all,

I’m trying to import a friend’s deck and am getting the following error message:

Import failed. Debugging info:

‘utf-8’ codec can’t decode byte 0xb5 in position 1: invalid start byte

I’ve tried searching for this error online both in this forum and elsewhere but the only few mentions ive seen, the fixes seem to involve some complex coding. Are there any more straightforward fixes ive missed?

What kind of a file is it – a csv?
Was it exported from Anki, or did your friend create/edit it?
Did your friend properly save it as UTF-8? Text Files - Anki Manual
