So ive been using 2 Decks since i started MS1, the difference in DR between the 2 decks was only 3% but now that the cards are increasing I have decreased the retention of both my “current block” deck and my “long term” deck, after doing so I also increased the gap between the 2 decks by an extra percent, so instead of my intitial DR being 93% and 90, it is now 91% and 87%. I just completed my current block and after I switch the cards to my “long term” deck the intervals shot way up, ive only done some of these cards twice but it wants to push them back months. Both decks are under 1 preset with the DR being set for “this deck” on each one, is there anything ele that I can do to help with this massive increase of intervals or do i just have to deal with it until FSRS adjusts to the new DR percents.
FSRS doesn’t “adjust” to DR. FSRS calculates Stability based on your parameters, and then DR is used to scale that up or down to set the card’s interval.
You don’t say much about the timeline of these various changes and moves. If the last time you studied this card, it was scheduled at 93% DR (prior DR, current block deck), and the next time you study it, it is scheduled at 87% DR (new DR, long term deck), you should expect a significant jump.
The last time I did most of these cards they were at 91%, since the beginning of my current block its been at 91%, but now that ive finished it and moved it to my deck set 87%, the jumps have been much larger, I understand its normal to be like that but under my older DR of 93% and 90% I did not see the intervals jump this much, do I just take bullet on these cards and let FSRS do its thing or is there anything else I can try and do?
You’re asking if you just have to take a bullet on this – but you’ve given FSRS an instruction of basically, “schedule these cards for longer intervals, when I’m less likely to remember them,” and that’s what it’s doing. So no, you don’t just have to take a bullet – you can set a higher DR and have a better chance of remembering the cards.
Adjusting DR by even just 1pt can be a big change. Before, you used DRs that were 3pts apart – now you’re using DRs that are 4pts apart – so that accounts for the difference. Exactly how different they will be for any card’s scheduling depends on your parameters and the card’s individual review history.
There isn’t anything particularly surprising for this card – which you’ve graded Good 3 times, you’ve never gotten wrong, you’re studying on-time, and you’ve set for 87% DR – to jump from a 5d to 36d interval with another Good grade. As far as whether that interval is correct –
- How long has it been since you re-optimized your parameters? You can do that monthly. [And different parameters will also be a reason that the jump between your intervals is different.]
- How have your retention results been, as compared to your DR –
Stats > Retention?
my whole goal of dropping my percent was to reduce the review count. my main concern rn is that these cards im doing right now and anything I did for the past block are going to all get pushed back to the point i cant remember most of them so it may not show right now that I am dropping my retention but when all of these cards that I have completed for this block end up returning then my retention is going to drop drastically since it sent such a large batch of cards further back. I dont really know how FSRS works or if there was a way it would integrate the higher retention with the lower one.
I optimize my parameters around every 2 weeks.
this has been my retention
For which deck? You should probably consider them separately, since they have different DRs to compare to. Select the deck at the bottom of the window. [The regular Stats screen is fine for this. You don’t need that add-on’s special stats screen.]
Which drop had that goal, because you’ve mentioned several drops? From current-block to long-term? From the old 93/91 DR to the new 90/87 DR? From a 3pt difference to a 4pt difference?
The top picture is my “review deck” and the bottom is my "current block. which is funny becasue my “current block” DR is higher then the “review” but I have a lower retention.
I first dropped my percent from 93/90 to 91/87, I did this at the start of my current block over a month ago. 2 days ago I moved all of my cards except whatever will show up on my next block from my “current block” 91% deck to my “review” 87% deck. Thats when i really noticed the huge jump in these intervals
That’s the one with the lower DR, right? You’re meeting or surpassing your DR, so there’s no reason for FSRS to hold the cards to shorter intervals.
The jump from 5d to 36d might seem abrupt to you, but it’s because you’re abruptly lowering the DR for those cards. What might be a [completely made-up numbers] 5d-to-20d jump after the 4th Good grade at a higher DR is simply a bigger jump at a lower DR.
Those retention results also show that the scheduling appears to be working for you, at least in that deck. So you will just have to expect longer intervals there. With the lighter workload you have to accept a lower likelihood that you’ll remember the cards.
Makes sense, I was just worried about the increase and was trying to see if it’s normal, I appreciate the replies and your time, thanks for clarifying
