My cards intervals dont seem to be going up when correct and some go down!

I dont know if this is an issue with my settings or what, but i can not seem to get out of a 400-500 card a day loop, despite a 95% retention. when i hit good on cards they only go out a max of 2 days, so i keep doing the same cards over and over.

i looked at info for 1 particular card, and to my surprise, when i answered good on this card, the interval went down from 4 days to 3!. ive tried to optimize the fsrs settings but anki tells me its already optimized. im not sure whats going on here but i would think getting all of these cards right over and over, id be seeing them less.

heres the card where you can see the interval goes from 4 days to 3 days on a correct answer.

i do a lot of filtered decks to review cards missed over the last 3 days as well. do filtered decks affect the interval or other stats of the cards? i originally thought filtered decks were kind of Faraday caged and do not affect anything, but i dont know what else it could be. is my deck just hosed and i should start over?

heres my outlook graph and im trying to get to that promised land of under 100 cards a day, but i can never reach it. every day there are 400 cards. when i do the cards for today, then tomorrow goes from 350 to 400, ect. its like im not making headway even though im answering the cards correctly. out of the 450-500 cards i do daily i will repeat between 35-40.

here are my settings.

some notes for context. i switch off between ankipc and anki droid during the day. i always sync before ending and starting so there are no conflicts. i only use the again and good answers, (even tho for some reason the graph shows that easy has been clicked sometimes ??). ive reoptimized the deck 2 or 3 times now, and everyday after the daily cards, i will review the missed cards for the previous 3 days immediately after the daily cards as well as before bed.

anyone have any suggestions for me?
sorry for the wall-o-text

It’s not a despite but a because here. The higher the desired retention, the shorter intervals are and consequentialy more daily reviews you get. I suggest you have this setting at least at 90% or use Compute Minimum Recommended Retention to find a even lower value. See Deck Options - Anki Manual and the graph.

(@expertium, you’ll be interested)

This usually happens when you have optimised your parameters in-between the reviews. The optimisation makes Anki recalculate the DSR values.

(This seem to have become a FAQ, can anyone add it to the manual/issue tracker, @Anon_0000?)

This might be a card you failed a lot initially and why it has such a high difficulty. In recent versions, once a card gets really high difficulty it takes time to go down. However, that SS certainly looks absurd to me.

They do if you have keep the Reschedule option on in deck options. If you turn it off for a filtered deck, it’ll show cards in a “Preview Mode” that doesn’t affect card statistics.

thanks for the reply. my retention setting is definitely only at 90%. i was guestimating around 95% that i got right even tho the setting is 90%. i should have clarified that in the post. there are a few cards in there i got wrong a lot initially, so that could be the issue. difficulty will naturally come down over time is what your saying?

It certainly should but it’ll take time.

Can you also check your max interval setting by the way? It shouldn’t be very low.

heres the maxint. i think its set to a year. this might be default as i dont remember updating it.

Yes, that is the default value (100 years, not 1)

tiny little contribution here that might give you hope: I also have a 90% desired retention rate and my real retention rate is about 94%. three months ago, I had to do 266 reviews every day. this morning, the number was 154 (I have an average of 5 new cards per day).

thanks for this it does give me some hope on this. i think i might just need to stick with it

Will be done in a few days, for now I opened an issue:
