Switching between front only and front and reverse card type of study

Hi, I made a custom type of card starting from the basic (and reverse) type to study chinese characters.

According to the goal of the day, wether is to write a character after reading their sound or saying the sound of the character after seeing it, I would like to be able to review only the front side (character) of the cards or only the reverse side (sound).

Is there a way to do that? I tried with the custom study option but there is no way to select only one side of the cards.

Thank you

It would really help if you used the correct terminology. See Getting Started - Anki Manual.

I assume that you have made a note type with two card types, one for sound → writing, and one for writing → sound. You want to review only one card type a day.

This is (almost) what the sibling burying in the deck options does.

One of the ways would be to set the Deck Override option to automatically place the different card types into different decks/subdecks:

Then you would be able to initiate a study from the one you need on a specific day.

While that allows to study the card types separately, it’s not a good idea to ignore the reviews of a deck every other day. They’ll pile up quickly and OP wouldn’t benefit from the algorithm.

I personally use the deck override feature to allow me to study one card type in a session, but also have the bury option enabled and I study both decks each day (except when I’m slacking and study nothing…).

If each deck will really be studied every other day, there won’t be any long-term accumulation, and the algorithm is lenient enough for a single-day offset not cause much harm, especially when the intervals are long already.
(that’s not to say that I see a point in such a split the OP asked about, tbh, but to each their own)

Maybe you’re right, but I imagine that newer cards would be lapsed more often and eventually become overwhelming.

I’d like to see a simulation on this.
