Suggestion: Add notifications to Anki

I’ve searched for add‑ons that offer notifications for due cards in Anki and found nothing.

Is there an add‑on already available? If yes - could someone please share a link.

If no - then here’s my suggestion for a notification feature:

After studying some cards I often have to wait until they re‑appear (for example after a 10‑minute learning step). It would be far more convenient if Anki could display a notification when N amount of cards becomes due (including those in re/learning).

There is an add‑on that shows the time remaining until cards become due again. However, it would be much better if Anki could send actual notifications or alarms on the PC when cards become available, just like other apps do.

That add-on is different, if I understood it correctly.

That add-on gives notification every N minutes. It’s not related to if we have due cards or not.

I mean notification in way at which after I reviewed my cards and still have N amount of cards on re/learning after 10/15/30 minutes.

For example, I might want to do something else on PC, for example watch some Anime and be notified exactly when my cards would become due again.

I tried simply set up timer, but it adds friction and make chances of me actually coming back to studying lower.
Also, I had a problem with a timer because when I send my cards on 15m learning step they come back after 16-17m not exactly after 15m so it adds another friction.

I don’t mean notification in simple timer way, I mean notification directly related to condition of my cards as when I have them due, preferably with an ability to chose after which amount of due cards user would give a notification.

Other more simplistic apps like torrent trackers give notification on Windows itself or even better timer-like notification which is more persistent.
I really think what implementing an ability to give a notification related to cards themselves, not just a lopped interval in pomodoro style, would increase effectiveness of studying of Anki.

Personally, for me, it would be an important feature to be able to reviews cards and come back to them again when they are ready by being notifying with an app itself.

Maybe these are a bit similar to that.

Thanks for your reply.

First one is Linux only with last review complaining what it doesn’t working.

Second one is paid only and it shows it only as a badge. For example, if I would watch 2-hour long movie, I will not notice that.

I am just a user and not a contributor if it’s too complicated to do, or it’s not a priority for Anki FOSS community right now, I am okay with that.

I think that function is not so complicated, but in my case I use a timer like eroscard suggested. add-on: :hot_beverage:Break Timer - after 10 cards hide Anki and pop-up 3 minute (Created by Shigeඞ)

e.g. when I want to do something else on my PC I use a keyboard shortcut to start a timer for 10 minutes and when it ends, Anki automatically displays. In this case I do not need notifications for each card, there are either always many cards or none at all, and regardless of how many cards remain I need to review them once the timer ends so I don’t need the card info.

I updated the add-on there, see if it does what you want now.

Thank you for your reply and effort!

It works perfectly as I wanted! Thank you.

It already 99% good. But if you want/can, then I have few suggestions:

  • allow setting up a number after which due cards would be seen, for now it reacts on 1 card. Like to see a notification after N amount of cards, not after every 1 card.
  • make a notification persistent. Like an alarm clock or timer which will not disappear until you click on it.

But again those 2 improvements only if possible. It is already great! Thank you.

Edit1: And I think there is a bug. After I studied every card on due today, that notification appeared as a persistent tab. Like there is no more due cards but notification just there and not going away. It became this way after I finished all of my decks. It still usable as bug appear only after studying is finished.

Edit 2: that bug is worse than I think. It still persistently shows to me there are due cards even after I closed Anki app. It is great what it works even with closed Anki, but there is no more cards.

Edit 3: bug was stronger than I thought. That notification window was there even after I disabled that add-on. I rebooted the PC and it’s gone. Please fix that bug, I think it’s too powerful.

It’s not actually a bug, I just left the notification active even with Anki closed. You can disable it by right-clicking on the red star and closing it. I could leave it as an option within the dialog box; that might be better.

No. I mean there are no cards to review at all for today like I did all of them but add-on show notification to review cards.

Are you sure it’s not a bug? If yes, then it’s my misunderstanding.

The part about continuing to show can be corrected, but I was referring to the part about it remaining open even when Anki is closed, as that was someone else’s request, so I could leave that as an option.

I didn’t mean to complain about notification to be shown when Anki is closed. I like that aspect.
I mean part at which there are no cards to review, but notification is showing up. And you already that it could be fixed.

As a non-native English speaker, I presume I didn’t explain myself well enough. Sorry for this inconvenience.

Thank you for what you already did.

That bug at which notification are shown when there are no more cards on today is still there.

My mistake. I didn’t update an add-on. I thought Anki updating them automatically.

It seems that bug solved.
