Specified file not found in archive

My friend has been working on some Anki flashcards and MCQs for about 3 months now and I wanted to check on his work on iPhone.
He sent me the .apkg files and I tried importing them but they give me “Specified file not found in archive” error.
I have seen some related topics that talks about the collection.anki2 and media or something, I don’t really understand this since I didn’t make them.
I’d be very glad if someone could take me through a step-by-step and explain what I should do.

  1. Are you sure that your friend made this export with one of the legitimate Anki apps (which you can download on the main site – https://apps.ankiweb.net/ )?
  2. Are you sure that the file you have is actually an apkg package (and not something else that was given an apkg extension)?

The error seems to imply that the file you’re trying to import is invalid, perhaps because it was exported with non-Anki software, or a buggy old version of Anki. Perhaps if they export it again using the latest computer version of Anki, you’ll have more luck.

  1. It was probably made using AI to create fast flashcards and MCQs
  2. It is a legitimate apkg not another extension

So you suggest to export it again?

If they didn’t already do so, I suggest exporting with the latest computer version of Anki, and no add-ons.

Updates:
I exported the file from my laptop and it gave me the option to export it with media and I checked it.
Now it’s imported and working. Thank you for the assistance.
