Sketchy Pepper Pharm deck is randomly duplicating cards

I recently downloaded the sketchy pharm pepper deck and I’m having the weirdest glitch. When I download the deck it has the correct number of cards, but as soon as I open browse to suspend/unsuspend cards anki will create 7 duplicate cards in a bunch of the subdecks. The last time I donwloaded the deck it created more than 500 cards. I’ve tried deleting and redownloading, restarting my computer, and check database but it hasn’t resolved. I’m not sure what’s going on and I haven’t seen any posts about any similar problems. I previously used the sketchy micro pepper deck and didn’t have any issues.

Is it safe to assume you already understand the difference between notes and cards? I need to check that you aren’t sensing “duplicates” where there are really just multiple cards for each note.

If you’re already keen to that – the only time I’ve seen this oddity, it was fixed by running Tools > Check Database. Have you tried that?

Yes, sorry they are actually all notes. I guess I meant that anki is creating duplicate notes. For example, for one subdeck there are supposed to be 9 notes, but when I open up browse and unsuspend those notes and then go to study 16 notes show up. Because they are notes too, I’m not sure how to sort through the duplicates without actually going through those cards and suspending each one manually, if that makes sense.

I tried Tools > Check Database and that didn’t solve it.

If they are contained in a deck, you can unsuspend them, and you can study them – those sound like cards.

When you view them in the Browse window, either as notes or as cards, are they showing as duplicates, with the first field outlined in red:

The duplicates don’t show up any differently and aren’t outlined in red. I flagged the new ones when they first appeared and I don’t see any way to differentiate them. Deleting one deletes the entire subdeck.

Yes, these are definitely cards, and they all appear to be different. From this I can see that at least Cards 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are sibling cards created from the same note, but I suspect the rest are as well. You can’t delete individual sibling cards – you’ll notice there’s no “Delete” action in the “Cards” menu – you can only delete the whole note, which is not what you want to do.

I started this out by assuming you were familiar with the difference between cards and notes, but I think you need to go back and understand that first – Getting Started - Anki Manual .

The difference between notes and cards is really besides the point here. The deck starts with a set number of cards and then as soon as I open the deck or interact with at all, it duplicates the cards. They may appear to be different but cards 1-7 are duplicates that are generated randomly. If they were all different I wouldn’t have posted here! I attached another picture so you can see for example that cards 3 and 36 are identical. It is also changing two of the cards to be blank.

The pattern is very specific, 7 cards are duplicated for each note and two are changed to empty. What could possibly be causing this?

How many cards does the deck start with?

Is it this deck – https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/97769250 ? Without even downloading it, I can see that it is clearly designed to have multiple questions per note. The sample notes have 9, 17, and 14 questions and answers, and the note type will hold up to 30. If those aren’t being used to somehow generate multiple cards, that’s a big waste of Anki functionality! [You might also ask yourself: if this deck was posted with no user information or explanation, and it only has 2 reviews since 2021 – is it any good? Is it worth your time to work this out?]

If it seems like things are being randomly generated, or disappearing – is that because of some fancy scripting on the card templates? That’s a great place to look if you think something isn’t working right about this deck.

It may also potentially be worth pointing out that the Sketchy Pepper Pharm deck was originally posted 5+ years ago. Much newer versions of this deck exist, and have been folded into the Anking deck. FWIW.

It sounds like when it was originally exported, Anki didn’t include all the siblings in the export. Tools>Check Database or Empty Cards should cause any missing cards to be generated in one go, instead of as you view them in the browse screen.
