I am curious about the next release and wanted to play around with it. However I want to make sure that I do not corrupt my deck/ history. While I assume one can just create a backup on desktop and restore from it and should be fine, I am not sure about the synchronized Ankiweb account.
Should I avoid syncing with ankiweb if I play around with Betas/RCs or should there be no problem ?
A backup should be enough, never encountered a corruption deck/history in beta testing

I have crashed Anki at least a hundred times in the development of my add-ons but so far no deck or history has been broken.
Just synchronize and backup your database. You should be fine. I even run the current git tree version of Anki with no problems so far.
