Possible to update shared deck after custom field added?

Consider the following scenario:

  1. I download a shared deck from ankiweb
  2. I add a custom field
  3. The original author updates the shared deck on ankiweb

Question: if I download the new shared deck, am I able to update everything (except naturally the field I added)?

If you have a recent version of Anki, you should be able to merge the notetypes on import. Packaged Decks - Anki Manual
