Persistent Preview Window

Please consider making the Preview Window persistent even if it has nothing to show.

I was wishing for this for awhile but never requested. Now that I am testing the new Stage Manager feature in the MacOS beta this is even more important. Stage Manager moves new windows to the front and pushes the current window aside. The user can option to re-arrange, but that is only good if the windows persist. If a window disappears (like Preview if it has nothing to display) the user must manually keep re-arranging.

All my cards are heavy latex (not mathjax) so I am constantly Previewing after making changes to my cards.

This seems like an XY problem to me, because your actual issue is that Anki lacks a good way to preview LaTeX while creating cards. For this, I would suggest the Editor Live Preview addon.

My problem wasn’t with previewing while editing, but previewing after changing cards. The cards already exist in the Browser but previewing opens another window. I find it mildly inconvenient that a window closes when I switch to not having a card selected and having to click preview again. But with stage manager in Ventura it was a pain. The Preview was shown and the main window and browser was disappearing since stage manager was “single” window focused.

Thank you for suggestion for the add-on. I did try it, but I had to constantly scroll to see my fields and the preview. I’d still prefer if the preview window stayed on the screen and didn’t keep disappearing but with the keystroke to preview it isn’t that bad. … just mildly inconvenient.

Thankfully, with one of the latest betas in Ventura, there is an option to keep windows together and if the user checks that off, all Anki windows will stay together on the same screen.

I don’t plan on using Stage Manager, I was just trying to help and report what may be complaints once the new version of MacOS is released.
