I prefer burying all siblings (all three toggles are on), because most of my cards are of a type where there’s a strong association between them and so having seen one card means I can instantly remember any siblings.
However, when using the amazing image occlusion feature, to very easily create a ton of anatomy cards, I’ve run into a bit of a problem. Imagine you’re trying to learn the words for each body part:
And so you use image occlusion to occlude every word. This creates a ton of siblings very quickly.
Now, in my own studies I can’t for the life of me remember “head”, and so I’ve only seen two or three cards in weeks, yet “head” and “toes” aren’t “siblings” in the same sense that a card like {{c1::A}} = {{c2::B}} are “siblings”, and so I would’ve liked to study all of these particular siblings concurrently.
Is there any way to work around this, other than requesting a per-card sibling setting?
You can’t set it per-card, but you can set it per-deck. If you want your Image Occlusion (IO) cards to have different burying settings, have Anki create them in a different “IO” deck (a subdeck or sibling deck to the rest of your cards) – and move your existing IO cards to that deck. Then assign that IO deck to a different Options preset, with burying turned off. Deck Options - Anki Manual
Nothing other than the obvious move IO cards to a different deck. This problem have actually been discussed before and there is a Github issue to track this. The solution I suggest is to move the burying settings out from Deck Options and to a seperate screen in note types instead.
The upcoming Load Balancer feature doing that would be the first step towards it (if we do it). In the meantime, your only option is to move your cards to a different deck with different preset settings.
Yeah, something like this sounds like a great idea to me I guess it depends on how often this happens. If it’s very rarely a problem then a per-card setting is best (no need for many note types), if more frequently a note type setting makes sense, and if this never happens to anyone but you and me, then the current situation with a deck setting is fine
Thank you both for the suggested workaround. I’ll do that for now!
There are a few years I created in my fork of Anki a “sibling” (more like cousin) card burying feature. Last week, I published it as an addon so I can eventually share some of my anki decks that use this burying feature. I think this will really help you: Source Siblings Bury Cousins addon (support thread)
Basically, you need to install the add-on, create a field called Sibling for each note (cards), and put a key like anatomy card on it. Then, in every anki note you do not want to see in the same week, add the field Sibling with the content anatomy card. This will create a buried group anatomy card where every note with the anatomy card keyword will not show on the same week. You can create other groups as human bone cards, and every note on this “group” will not show up in the same week.
This is a manual process as it requires you to run the command Tools -> Bury all siblings cards before starting studying, but after that, you can sync with Anki Web and study on other devices such as AnkiDroid. This bury technique, works for every note with the field Sibling; they do not need to be from the same note type.
