Note types not alternating when reviewing new notes

Hello,

I’m certain this question was already asked at some point but I can’t seem to find answers related to my problematic when I look for it, may it be on google or on the forums. Unfortunately, due to personal health issues, the amount of energy I can spend on this is quite limited so I’d rather ask directly on the forum. Apologies if the answer was right under my nose.

I downloaded the following deck:
https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1550984460

As you can see, it has two note types: Recognition and Recall.

The behavior I’d like it to have would be for the deck when reviewing new cards to:

  1. keep the order in which the words were added (学校, 川, 手…)
  2. have the first half of the new cards to be of type Recognition
  3. have the second half of the new cards to be of type Recall (and from the same notes as the first half).

It’s a behavior I did manage to have when I built my own deck, so it should be feasible.

Unfortunately it only seems to display the cards type by type. Meaning that it’ll go through all the Recognition typed cards first, before I get to see the Recall ones.

In my deck settings I have:
New Cards → Insertion order: Sequential (oldest cards first)
Display Order → New card gather order: Deck
Display Order → New card sort order: Order gathered
Display Order → New/review order: Show after reviews

I also unchecked Burying → Bury new siblings

Thanks in advance for your help.

Again, I apologize if the answer is some basic interaction I should had been able to find on my own.

Are all of those Recognition and Recall cards in the same subdeck? Some deck authors sort card types to separate subdecks. With this setting, you’d be getting only the ones from one subdeck, until it’s empty. If they are in separate subdecks, change this to “Ascending position” instead.

Change this to “Card type”.

First of all, thanks for your answer.

The types are both in the same subdeck. In order to avoid any conflict I did my tests on the “deepest” one.

For good measure, I did change the deck’s settings as you advised:

  • Display order → New card gather order: Ascending
  • Display order → New card sort order: Card type

It led to the same results unfortunately.

not woking

Here are my full settings for the deck:

Then this could be a shared-deck issue instead of a settings issue.

  • You only showed the card type of the cards. Are you sure that these cards are sibling cards made from the same note? Check the note types for 2 cards you consider to be a pair – do they match? Or look at the card templates for the note type itself – does it make multiple cards called Recognition and Recall?

  • Are you sure that these cards are in order in the New-queue the way you want? In the Browse window, show the “due date” column. For New cards, that will contain a “New #” instead. Sort by that column – are the card types still in pairs, or are all of the recognition cards first?

The cards are indeed sibling cards from a same note:

The note itself does have the two card types defined:

Finally, the Recall type does render properly in the preview window

Great, that helps narrow down the issue.

Are the Deck Options you posted from the deck these cards are actually in, or from the deck you are clicking on to study?

The deck options are set on both in order to avoid any conflict.

I used “save to all subdecks” from the topmost deck.

Let’s circle back then –

All of your screenshots are very tight, so it’s hard to pickup any extra info from them. But right here at the edge of this picture – is that 3rd card also “New #0”? What are the New-queue numbers for these first 10 notes you showed in your animation?

Apologies for the screenshots size. I thought it would had been more practical for you to not be drowned in irrelevant information. I’ll include more information within the next ones.

All the entries are set to New #0. Here’s a bigger screenshot:

No apologies necessary – I definitely appreciate the consideration!

But – tada! That’s the problem. All of your cards are at New #0, so Anki is feeding them into the queue like they are all siblings on one giant note, and then giving you all of the card 1s first. [I’m sorry the deck author did this to you! Please leave feedback on the deck so other users will know and/or contact the deck author to tell them to fix that.]

But it’s a quick fix. Do you like the order they are in on your screen right now? Then –

  • Select all
  • Cards > Reposition – start 0, step 1, uncheck both boxes

After that, everything else you have set should work.
