New cards/day and Display order

Hi everyone,

In a deck with two card types, I would like to study all cards from type 1 before switching to type 2. In the Display order section, I’m using “Random notes” and “Card type, then order gathered” (and I’ve tried other combinations). The problem I’m encountering is the following: it seems like the new cards daily limit determines the number of new notes that are picked; if a limit of ten new cards per day is set, Anki picks five random notes from the deck, first presents the five type 1 cards and then the five type 2 cards of the same notes.

From what I’ve read on another topic (named “Help with new card order!”), this was how the v2 scheduler worked. I have AnkiDroid 2.23.3 installed though and I also tried it on a fresh install on another device without logging in, the same thing happens.

So, what am I missing? I’m new to Anki and I did try to understand this by myself but I’m hitting a wall here.
And if everything is functioning like it should and there is no basic way to solve this, what would be a simple/elegant solution to be able to study all the cards from one type before switching to another?

Thank you for your help.

I don’t understand your problem: if it’s showing you 5 type 1 cards then 5 type 2 cards, that’s 10 cards as you set it. Do you want 10 of each? Well then, set the limit to 20.

Edit: is that description what you actually want instead of what happens? In that case:

  • If you’re making the cards yourself: set the insertion order to “Random”.
  • If you’re using a premade deck or made lots of new cards already: select all the cards in the browser and reposition them with steps of 1 and check the random option.

Then set:

  • The new card gather order to “Ascending position”.
  • And the new card sort order to “Card type, then order gathered”.

New cards should be given a random position now, but with the siblings having the same position.

A random player will throw from both sides, but he only wants to use one. This should be broken down into two sub-decks by type and simply studied separately.
