"More cards due later today" - but I want all my cards in one sitting

I have AnkiMobile, and I use thi or desktop - it doesn’t matter where this happens, but I have a screenshot from Mobile, so here we go

I have v3 scheduler checked.
When I study, I use Again or Good answer buttons only.
I very frequently get notifications at the end of my sessions that

  1. The next learning card will be ready in X minutes.
  2. There are X learning cards due today.

However, I want to get all my cards in one session. I don’t want to wait minutes, or even an undescribed amount of time (later today?) to see the cards. I want the cards to appear in the same session.

I tried Custom Study, but most of the options have comments “Available cards: 0” even if I have cards in one or both of the above.

I’m not an expert in ANKI algorithm. Can someone explain in layman terms how I can get cards into one session?

Thank you

Increase the learn ahead limit in preferences → review ( → scheduling on ios).
Note though that increasing the learn ahead limit might lead to worse retention.

Hi Gustaf, thanks! I have this limit set to 0. Is that a problem?

It’s not a problem per se, but it is what causes the (for you) unwanted behaviour. I’ll refer to the manual:

Learn ahead limit
Tells Anki how to behave when there is nothing left to study in the current deck but cards in learning. The default setting of 20 minutes tells Anki that cards should be shown early if they have a delay of less than 20 minutes and there’s nothing else to do. If you set this to 0, Anki will always wait the full delay, showing the congratulations screen until the remaining cards are ready to be reviewed.

Dearest Gustaf, thank you. I think I understand now - but I will ow do a few days testing of this with the delay set to 20

Hey Gustaf, I changed the time you pointed to (Learn ahead limit) to 20 min and I still have the same “issue”.

Am I correct in thinking that this time depends somehow on the minutes and dates in the review algorithm, and how many cards I study per day?

Would it be wrong to set this limit to maximum?

It depends on your longest learn/relearn step. E.g. if you have a longest learning step of 15 minutes, then 20 minutes learn ahead will ensure you never have to wait for a card. However if you have a 60 minute step you will need a 65 minute learn ahead limit.

I suspect you may be hitting a bug with the v2 scheduler in AnkiMobile. Please visit AnkiMobile’s app store page and update to the latest version. If that fixes things, you can reset the learn-ahead limit to 20 minutes, as you only have a 10 minute intraday learning step.

Ok, thanks for the tips. I’m on v3 Scheduler, not v2 - but I’ll update the app anyhow of course and see how this helped  Thanks!

I think this worked! I updated the app on my iPhone, but I also reviewed the settings (especially the relations that you mentioned) and the problem disappeared  Thank you!
