Media volume is lower than the system volume

  1. I don’t quite understand why the volume is always much lower than the system volume when playing videos with the ‘video’ tag in Anki for Windows/AnkiMobile. This is quite troublesome when switching between different applications, so I often need to manually adjust the system volume.

  2. Why doesn’t Windows support MP4 when playing videos with the ‘video’ tag? I have to convert MP4 to WEBM by ffmpeg, but converting a large number of MP4 files to WEBM is very time-consuming. Moreover, the WEBM format performs far worse on iPhones than MP4 (Read/Write video.currentTime). Therefore, I have to use two formats, which is laborious, time-consuming, a waste of storage space, and extremely cumbersome.

The volume of Anki is approximately 40% of the system volume. It’s really frustrating! How can I adjust it to the normal volume?

Video tags in AnkiMobile are handled by iOS, so I suspect you’d see identical volume if playing them in Safari. Have you done a test to confirm?

MP4 codecs have licensing restrictions, and Qt are not willing to distribute open source versions with them included.

That’s the results of testing the volume when playing the same MP4 file in Anki and PotPlayer respectively on Windows.

You’ve posted this in the AnkiMobile section, and I was asking about AnkiMobile. If your problem is only on Windows, I suggest you start by comparing the volume when playing the video via a [sound:] tag vs the video tag you’re using.

In Windows you can adjust the relative volume app-by-app. Have you checked those volume settings?
