They work for me - if I type \(x^2\)
into a field and move to another field, it’s rendered as MathJax. If that doesn’t work for you, please follow the steps on When problems occur - Frequently Asked Questions

I followed the instructions on the FAQ before I posted.
Here is my result with your example:
Those symbols are required when typing directly into a field. If you’ve already opened the MathJax editor, you don’t need to include them.
