In the latest version of anki, typing
\(1 < 2\)
gets automatically converted to
1 {\lt} 2
by the Mathjax preview, which causes the spacing around the binary operator to be lost. The correct substitution should avoid adding curly braces.

This was a problem I also had with the new version of Anki. But it will be fixed in 2.1.52. Here is link to the thread where this issue was discussed. https://forums.ankiweb.net/t/on-anki-2-1-50-arrows-are-not-properly-rendered-when-writing-chemical-reactions
Ah thanks, I must have missed that thread when I searched the forums.
