Managing card scheduling using new card limit and browser

Hello,

I’m trying to take more control over my studying. I have a large deck (KOFI French) and I want to add certain verbs and/or tenses into my custom deck intentionally.

According to the deck guidance and specific deck settings, there are no new cards automatically added. The recommendation is to add one or two verbs at a time. In the deck manual, the instruction is to use “Custom Study → Increase today’s new card limit” to add the right amount of cards to reflect a specific verb.

This assumes among other things that I’m learning the verbs in the order of the cards in the deck.

These are the things (I think) I need help with.

  • How do I see which cards are included in the custom study? When I increase today’s new card limit, their statuses are not changed in deck browse. I see the number of cards I increased with in the deck view.
  • Is it possible to view the included cards in the custom study list(for example to check that I got all the cards for the verb in the case of this deck)?
  • Is it possible to manually add or remove cards from the custom study list?

Hope I made my questions clear!

Thanks

“Custom Study” is not a mode, but just a menu of actions to choose from. Increasing limits just increases the limits beyond those set in deck options, while any other action creates a filtered deck, which kind of is a mode. Filtered Decks - Anki Manual says so in the summary of individual options.
If you increase the limit of new cards, you will see new cards that you would have seen if the limit in the deck options was higher and not exhausted yet.

About the order: Deck Options - Anki Manual

Thank you,

this was helpful for me to understand better what happens when adding new cards using the Increse today’s new card limit function under custom study.

From the Filtered Decks - Anki Manual:

The easiest way to create a filtered deck is with the Custom Study button, which appears at the bottom of the screen when you click on a deck. It offers some convenient preset filters for common tasks like reviewing the cards that you have failed that day. It will create a filtered deck called “Custom Study Session” and automatically open it for you.

It seems to be just one Custom Study Session and from my quick testing, it doesn’t seem to be possible to browse it. I’m guessing that the Increase today’s new card limit reflects the limit option in the manual filtered deck, would that be correct?

It doesn’t seem to be possible to add cards manually but there is an easy work-around by tagging or flagging for example. I’ve created a filtered deck for my studies and are adding items by search to it.

So I think, with you pointing me to the filtere decks section of the manual, I’m able to achieve what I was looking for!

Many thanks!

Didn’t I tell you that “Increase today’s new card limit” does NOT create a filtered deck? It is not a custom study session then. Only the new card limit for today changes.

If you open deck options, then under “Daily Limits” there is “New cards/day”, and There are three tabs: “Preset”, “This deck”, “Today only”. If “Today only” is selected, it should use the value there until tomorrow, and then probably switch back to the tab that was active before you clicked “Today only”?

I know the KOFI system is really particular about New cards and order. It sounds like you’re on the right track now with tags. You could make a Filtered deck for your New cards by finding the ones you need, tagging/flagging them, and then setting your filter to e.g. is:new tag:readytostudy.

Once you build a Custom Study Session, building another will replace it, but

  1. You can rename it first, if you want to keep it as a Filtered deck.
  2. You can view the current contents of a Custom Study (or Filtered deck) in the Browse window.
