Make the card template dropdown text more appropriate

Is there an easy way to make this dropdown more attractive? A shorter name for the card type. Viewing when pressed Cards... and going to template view. It bugs me a little! :stuck_out_tongue:

The display is dynamic, the content depends on the structure of your cards.

For Cloze note types – The name of the card is ā€œCloze.ā€ But you don’t need to use that dropdown at all, because you can’t switch between card types. The same goes for Image Occlusion note types.

For any other note type – Sure, you can name each of the cards whatever you want! The name will show at the front of the dropdown, just after the card number.

@ferophila @Danika_Dakika I see. I understand what information it’s providing now … it’s showing the {{ fieldname }} or the template tags on the front and reverse. I’m still not 100% sure about multiple card types per note, I’ll have to check the documentation again … The example you gave, could you walk me through all those card types and how you’re using them? A gif perhaps?

I guess my point is: it might not be the best place to cram in all that visual information when there’s more than 3 or 4 fields on the front or reverse.

For the original ā€œBasicā€ and ā€œClozeā€ cards it seems fine; it’s a minor annoyance when it overflows in this way for larger cards :stuck_out_tongue:

I wasn’t presenting my set of card types as a ā€œmodelā€ for how anyone should do things – just as an example of how card types are displayed when they have names. At its simplest, multiple card types would be something like ā€œreverseā€ cards – see: Card Generation - Anki Manual and Getting Started - Anki Manual for more examples.

Just taking my 1-4 cards you see there – the first 2 are a ā€œrecognitionā€ card, with the word in my target language on the front, and a ā€œproductionā€ card, with the word in my native language on the front. And since I already have sentences/translations/audio in fields on this note (to use as examples on those 1st cards), it’s easy to make cards with those sentences to practice listening and speaking fluency.

There is a maximum length for what it will display for a side of the card, and it also appears to stop at 4 fields per side. But I don’t think it’s fair to consider it ā€œvisualā€ information. For a note type with meaningful field names, it’s really a succinct way to effectively describe what is contained on a card – so you don’t even need to name it. That’s how a lot of people use it, I’m sure.

So the bottom line here is that for small amounts of fields, that Card Type dropdown gives a helpful way to describe the card’s content, but for a longer list of fields, it’s not very helpful (as it’s hard to digest visually). Seems I’m stuck with it as-is. Thanks @Danika_Dakika anyway.

Also for a Cloze type card, there doesn’t seem to be a way to rename it. I copied this originally from the default cloze note type, so perhaps that’s why.

Correct. But again, you don’t need to touch it on a cloze note type. If you aren’t making cloze cards, you don’t need to use this note type though.
