Make tagging as easy as flaging

I usually use flags (card) when i should be using tags (notes) just because they are easier to use on the fly with one hand (ankidroid) with just 2 taps (1 open flags, 1 select flag)

To tag i have to reach up, search tag (they are ordered alphabetically), reach down and tap ok

My suggestion to improve this and make it 2 taps too are:

  • ordered by tags applied, and then by last used
  • Remove ok and cancel. Tag and keep the dialog open if you tap on the square (to be able to tap more than one) or tag and close it if you tap on the tag name. Always closing would also work. If you have to add 2 tags, just tap again on the menu

Thanks for reading!

If its too much, at least put ok and cancel on top, closer to the buttons

Am i alone with this?

Folks can see your suggestion just fine. There’s no need to bump it for attention. It can take time for new ideas to percolate.

I don’t know if the devs will decide to add this, but here are a few other things for you to consider –

I suppose with just a few tags in your collection, that could be productive. But imagine a user with dozens or hundreds of tags. Sorting according to some invisible frequency/recency attribute could make it nearly impossible to find the tag they are looking for.

One of the reasons flags are a natural fit for a quick study-screen action is that they are limited to just a few, and inherently card-related. But you can keep using the quick flags action. Your 2nd step would be at the end of the day/session – search up those cards you flagged, add the tag you want to all of them, and then unflag them to get the flag cleared for the next day.

Thanks. Im was just not sure, if things get buried to never be seen again or theres actually somebody that at least skims over them, to at least tell you its a bad idea

I have ~20 tags, I just dont manually tag during a review session. The interface for creating cards and reviewing should be different or at least have both use cases in mind. Having the field disappear on action (tag or untag) should be a no brainer. At the very least having the fields closer to the finger in the interface to make it more friendly

Removing a current tag is one use case, so having the used tags first is a good idea (it already does that), but second would be to bump any tag that has been recently used. If a tag has been recently used is very likely to be used again. Its not invisible frequency

If you have tags in the hundred you are either using search already, or you can probably benefit from this too. You are likely using just 5-6 at most at the time, so ordering by frequency you will have them at your fingertips

This is what i already do, kinda. The reality is that i dont always have time to do the post process work and it just pile up

I think flags were designed as you say, quick and dirty, while tags are supposed to be slow and thoughtful. But maybe this should be rethought. Reality is that they are not the same. One marks cards and the other mark notes for no reason. This is what really separates them. You can even rename flags now too. They are not quick and dirty anymore. I use almost all of the flags by now :S

Anyway, ive used other android apps that allow tagging, such as tasks apps and the tagging process is fast even with hundred of tags. Tagging isnt inherently slow
