MacOS (Apple Chip) failed download

I’m getting nowhere with trying to download Anki. My MacAir is 2 years old with an Apple Chip and updated to Tahoe 23.3(a). I initially get the text screen below, and pressed ENTER. Then I get the error text below which I cannot decipher. I’ve deleted the Anki file and tried again several times with the same result. I’ve read the forum files and didn’t find any steps forward. Help appreciated and thanks.

  1. Latest Anki (press Enter)

  2. Choose a version

  3. Allow betas: off

  4. Cache downloads: on

  5. Download mirror: off

  6. Uninstall

If your problem persists, please delete this text, and explain the problem you are having in as much detail as possible.

Please read this previous forum comment containing information about possible fixes and workarounds for the issue.

Please be aware that the Rosetta workaround should be considered a short-term, temporary workaround. It will no longer work if you ever upgrade to Mac OS 28 after September 2027 or if you buy a new Mac computer after that date and transfer your files to it using Migration Assistant.

Ben,

Thanks for your reply. I read the link that you referenced, and I honestly don’t understand what they were saying. I feel foolish having paid $25 for the iPhone app, supporting Anki, only to find that the desktop program cannot be loaded without workarounds that are going to expire soon. If there’s a way to make it work like every other Mac program, i.e. dragging the icon into your program directory, and then going to work seamlessly, I’d like to hear about it. I’ve watched enough YouTube videos on Anki where the presenter does exactly that on a Mac to get started, and they’re working within minutes.

Please give the new beta a try: Anki 26.05 Beta 1

Sorry you are having difficulties. Anki does install just fine on most Mac systems with no extra steps or workarounds needed. It is just that there is something about your particular computer that is interfering with the install process.

You may want to consider trying the beta version linked above. It uses a new installer that hopefully might avoid the issues you are encountering. (The new installer is a .dmg file that you open, allowing you to drag the Anki icon into the Applications folder to copy it there. Basically, it works the same way other Mac apps are installed.)

Otherwise, if you want to continue troubleshooting the issue, we can go more slowly, addressing just a few things at a time:

  • Did you previously have an old, Intel-based Mac computer?
  • Did you transfer your files from the old Mac to this Macbook Air using Migration Assistant?
  • Did you previously have Anki installed on your old computer, or is this the first time you’ve installed Anki?
