[MacOS] Anki Error with Opening App after Trying to Update: certificate is not standards compliant

I am getting this error message when trying to open the app. I have tried all the suggestions I could find, including deleting and redowloading, restarting laptop, changing WiFi and nothing is working.

Anki Launcher

  1. Latest Anki (press Enter)

  2. Choose a version

  3. Allow betas: off

  4. Cache downloads: on

  5. Download mirror: off

  6. Uninstall

  • What version of macOS are you using?
  • Is your laptop set up and managed by an organization like a school or corporate IT department?

(I note that there was one previous report of the same “certificate is not standards compliant” error.)

(If a fix can’t be found, workarounds might include installing older version 25.02.7 or the unofficial “All in Anki” package.)

I have Sequoia 15.6.1 and no, this is a personal laptop.

Thank you for that information.

Are you able to view the https://pypi.org URL in Safari, or do you get a similar SSL certificate-related error?

  • You are using macOS Sequoia15.6.1 which was released in August 2025.
  • The other person who saw the same error was using macOS Sonoma 14.7.7 which was released in July 2025. (That other person didn’t see the problem until updating to 14.7.7.)
  • I am wondering if the problem (OS certificate store) might have been introduced into the macOS updates around that time in July/August 2025?
  • I am wondering whether the problem might go away by updating to a more recent OS version?

I’m not sure whether you might be willing to try updating your OS to see if it helps, but I note that the most recent version of macOS Sequoia is now 15.7.4.

If you are interested in investigating the workarounds instead, you can find details in this comment.

Yes I can open that link and I have been using Anki for a long time. The last time I used it was today and then was having a syncing error that I figured would get fixed by updating the app. When I tried to redownload an updated version, I started getting the error. I am going to update my Mac tonight but need the app to work to study.

I tried installing an older version, which opened but produced an error message when I tried logging in.

So, as I understand it, you had been using Anki up until today without any problem, but you started seeing syncing errors. You tried to update the Anki app but encountered the error in your original post. You then installed an older version of Anki, and you are able to run that version of Anki just fine. However, you are now unable to log into your account in the Anki app due to some error.

What is the error message you now see when trying to log in?

(Hopefully all the issues will be resolved by your OS update tonight. If not, I’m now wondering if there might be some sort of network-related issue that is the cause of all three problems.)

it was an os update problem, everything is good now. thank you!
