Could someone explain why I can easily create decks on the website but not on the Mac computer app? That does not even seem to be an option…. All I see a line of 5 icons at the bottome of black screen: Review / Add / Notes / Tags / Options. I did download a deck called “Italian 15,000 sentences,” and it seems I am stuck inside this deck. How do I go up a level to where I could see other decks, or create other decks. Thank you.
Unless you’ve installed add-ons that change the UI, when you start the latest (25.09.2) Mac desktop Anki app you first see a home window with a list of all your decks.
At the top of this home window there are buttons: Decks, Add, Browse, Stats, Sync.
At the bottom of this home window there are buttons: Get Shared, Create Deck, Import File.
You use the “Create Deck” button to create a new deck.
If you’ve installed add-ons that might be affecting the UI, please try starting Anki in safe mode (which disables add-ons) to see if that helps.
Edit: Added: If the problem is somehow with the “Italian 15,000 sentences” deck where you are getting stuck after entering the deck, try quitting the Anki app (using the menu bar → Anki → Quit Anki, or the Command-Q keyboard shortcut) and then restarting the app.
Normally when you enter a deck to study/review it, there are still buttons at the top of the window: Decks, Add, Browse, Stats, Sync. You use the “Decks” button to return to the home window/screen that shows all your decks.
Another possiblity is that the buttons are missing due to video driver issues. Please see Troubleshooting step #6 on the linked page to see if switching to a different video driver helps.
I will try that. Note: I just checked and the program I am using on my Mac is called Anki Notes and according to the Get Info function on my mac, it is version6.19 created Sept 20, 2024
You are not using the official Anki app. Instead, you are using a knockoff app (that seems to intentionally use “Anki” in its name to confuse learners looking for the actual Anki app). Sorry, but we can’t help you with your Anki Notes app support issues.
Thank you for your assistance. That explains things somewhat. I did find it confusing to find that there were many overlapping references to Anki and Noji. I did pay $37 CAD for a one year premium membership to Noji. I now understand that Noji is Anki, and so I am thinking that I should be ok using the Noji app. Unfortunately in all of this it seems that Noji will let me access my account on my phone, but does not recognize me as a paying customer when I try the online program. I have reached out to Noji. Thank you again.
No, Noji is not the official Anki app. Instead, Noji is another knock-off app that (previously) used “Anki” in it’s name to trick people into installing and using it. Sorry if you were tricked into paying money to them.
The actual official/officially-recognized Anki apps are AnkiMobile (iOS) and AnkiDroid (Android). You can find links to them in that Anki webpage I previously linked.
