hi there,
i have just started learning japanese and i want to create decks for it. my japanese input is working everywhere but not on anki. I use arch and for input i use ibus-Anthy. I saw multiple posts reguarding this but nothing seems to work for me. please help
can you explain what doesn’t work? that would help.
i cant type in japanese. it works on every app except on anki
You really should provide more info. Start with everything that follows:
Before posting, please do the following:
- Search these forums.
- Read Getting Help.
- Try the steps in Troubleshooting.
- Check the FAQs.
- Check the Platform Notes.
If your problem persists, please delete this text, and explain the problem you are having in as much detail as possible.
I use debian and ibus-anthy works just fine for me (yes, including in Anki). Without much more details (see quote above), there’s probably nothing we can do.
what more info should i provide? i can easily type japanese here but when i try to do so in anki, i just cant.
What versions of Arch, Anki, ibus, etc. are you using? What desktop/windowing environment? Does any other IME like ibus-mozc work with Anki?
Have you already tried all the steps in Troubleshooting?
i am using arch with kde plasma. anki version anki-25.02.6-linux-qt6. ibus version IBus 1.5.32. i tried using mozc, it didnt work. i also tried fcitx4 and 5 with mozc but none of them worked. all of them worked elsewhere but on anki. and yes i did try all steps in troubleshooting.
rn i have to write somewhere else and paste it into anki for it to work.
please reply…
As I said, we need more info. Like the following:
- What exactly are you doing? Give us exact steps.
- You say it doesn’t work. What do you see? Does Anki not register anything (no text appears) or does text appear, but not the expected japanese text?
- Can you see any errors pop up in the gui? What about the output of anki when run in a terminal, while you use ibus-anthy?
- Did you install all dependencies as outlined in the manual?
- Did you do all the things as outlined in the platform notes?
- Did it ever work for you? If yes, what exactly did you change so that it doesn’t work again (like updating Anki, your distro, ect)?
- How did you install anki? Flatpak, snap, via distro package manager, via the official anki installer?
- Does it not work everywhere in Anki? Or does it work in specific windows but not others?
We cannot test these things ourselves because we do not have access to your machine. If the info you provided would have been sufficent for us to reproduce (or to have an idea), we would’ve already given you an answer.
Try both the anki and anki-bin AUR packages. I had the same issue in the past. Im using anki-bin with fcitx5 and mozc and it works fine.
Better if OP sends a recording too if description is hard for them.
