Issues on downloading Anki on chromebook

Hi, I’ve been using “AnkiApp” for a few months without realising it was fake. I would like to start using the actual Anki desktop version however I’ve been trying to download it on my Chromebook for a few weeks with no avail. The first time I used instructions involving flatpak and it downloaded however the app wouldn’t open. The second time around I used the official Anki code but after writing tar xaf Downloads/anki-2.1.65-linux-qt6.tar.zst it just says Cannot open: No such file or directory tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now. I’m running Linux and downloaded that Anki version so I would appreciate any help as I’m not great with things like this. Thank you !!

You need to install tar first. Not sure how you install stuff on your system, but if it’s debian based then it would be something like this:

sudo apt install tar

Afterwards it should work, provided you follow the official steps:

(Also check the requirements section on the same manual page)

Edit:

Unless you have a very good reason you should get the latest anki version from the official website: Anki - powerful, intelligent flashcards.

Thanks for helping however the same error is coming up. Do you think it would just be worth it to download Ankidroid ?

Really? If tar is installed but cannot be found, then something is messed up in your PATH (you can run echo $PATH to see which folders are in your path).

Both, Anki and AnkiDroid, are fine. AnkiDroid doesn’t support addons and has a different user interface – aside from that, you can use both (or choose between them).

appreciate the advice, I think I’ll just purchase the anki app.

FYI AnkiDroid should be free. Only the iOS app is paid.

Before you invest – at least make sure you’re not paying for a knock-off. Anki knockoffs - Anki FAQs

thanks for clarifying, I meant the iOS apple app.

appreciate the pre warning, I’ve done enough research to the point where I know better now :smiling_face_with_tear:
