“Invalid params provided”

I can’t seem to find this issue online, so I’m unsure if I’m patient zero. I reset a card and unchecked the two options (I can’t even tell you what they’re called because I cannot close the error window) and now I’m getting this error.

I’ve reset cards numerous times, so I don’t know what could be causing this.

Edit: it’s also happening in safe mode

  1. You don’t say when you’re getting this error – what are you doing when the error happens? Or when you first got the error – was it when you clicked “OK” to reset that card?
  2. When you say you’ve “rebuilt the database” – is that running Check Database? Does that complete without any messages other than the confirmation pop-up in the corner?
  3. Have you done the rest of the Troubleshooting Checklist? Troubleshooting - Anki Manual
  4. Do you sync with any other devices?

This began when I unchecked these boxes for a particular card. I’ve done this numerous times with zero issue. The moment I did that; I received the classic error window that shares troubleshooting suggestions (I followed them). I restart Anki and I’m greeted with the image from the original post (my bad for not taking a screenshot, I didn’t have my anki credentials saved on PC).

I need to reemphasize that I was not able to close the “invalid params” window until my fifth or sixth restart. I managed to open up the FSRS screen and reoptimized + reevaluated the deck. This managed to fix the issue. Unsure why unchecking those boxes would cause such a big deal, and I have not messed with any FSRS settings.

That’s some creative thinking! I don’t know if it would have occurred to me that re-optimization would be a fix for a generic error about “params.” And that does seem like a strange error to get when you’re not even in your Deck Options. Hopefully that additional information will help the developers identify this!

Hi again! Unfortunately I was hit with the “invalid params provided” window again. This time, I did not reset any cards or change any sort of setting, so I’m unsure what’s going on.

Edit: so I synched my iPad, (I must have forgotten to do so earlier) and it seemed to rectify the issue.

I’m just concerned that there might be some underlying issues that might be affecting my FSRS despite changing nothing but the retention.

EDIT: nope, invalid params issue persists. ugh, it’s as if it was bricked. @L.M.Sherlock

The moment I click a deck to study, I get hit with that window. If I manually sync, I get the window once again, but I have to use task manager to close anki. When I reset anki, I can still browse cards. Should I just export everything and nuke anki? Would my FSRS settings per deck remain?

Final edit until someone replies: I updated to 25.02 and the issue seemed to disappear. Don’t know what else to do if it returns.

I’d to the following:

  1. Export your .colpkg to a safe place on your device.
  2. Make sure your device won’t autosync (e.g. turn off internet)
  3. Open the deck option for that deck that has issues.
  4. Completely wipe the FSRS parameters (remove them and safe. It’ll show you grayed out default params)
  5. See if your issue is gone.
  6. Report back.
  7. Restore from your .colpkg

Edit

That might solve it for good too. But if it comes back, you can try the above.

Thanks! I’ll definitely end up doing that if it comes back.

I figured that since I may be the first to ever report this issue, it may be useful for the devs.

What’s your thought-process there? Isn’t restoring the COLPKG going to restore the parameters that are giving the error? Or is this just a diagnostic step and you’re restoring the status quo for now?

Yes for both.

I would assume that the default parameters are known to work. Well, not great for most people but they at least won’t cause invalid params errors.

So if the default params are known to work and OP still has issues with them, then we’d have to troubleshoot what else could cause this.

If OP doesn’t have issues with the default parameters, then something with the (optimized / changed) params must be wrong. And if something with those params is wrong, maybe Expertium or L.M.Sherlock (or someone else knowledgable in that regard) can try to understand what the issue is and if it’s caused due to an error in the codebase or possibly due to something the user did.

Guess what error I just received on my iPad?

“invalid params provided”

I can return to the anki home screen and some other decks seem to be unaffected. I cannot for the life of me find the source of this issue. I thought it may have been my PC, but now it’s affecting the iPad.

It’s probably something in your database.

  1. Did you try the steps I outlined above?
  2. What are your FSRS params? Please paste them here – there might be something obvious already.

Everything seemed to be working fine after updating Anki, so I left things as-is. Testing the iPad hadn’t occurred to me as I rarely use Anki on it at home.

I will post additional info once I return from class!

Thanks for the help. Hopefully it’s something blatantly obvious.
