Image occlusion enhanced only shows an icon

After creating an image occlusion enhanced card (after watching the tutorial: How to use Image Occlusion Enhanced add-on for Anki (Memorize any Picture) ), I only get an icon as a question card.

The image is stored on my harddrive.
Check Media does not have any missing files.
The rectangle files are available.

I am using:

  • the latest anki version [Version ⁨25.09.2 (3890e12c) Python 3.13.5 Qt 6.9.1 Chromium 122] and
  • the latest image occlusion enhanced version (1.4) as well.
  • Anki is running on a Windows 10 PC.

There is only the image occlusion as add on installed. There is no error message. I did not change any template.

What have I already done?

- Started in safe mode

- run Check Database

- run Check Media nothing to be deleted via “delete unused media”

- screenshot picture is the same behavior

Why am I not receiving a body image with sight-blocking boxes?

What am I doing wrong? I must have missed something.

Thanks for your help

Ralf

Is there a reason you’re using the add-on instead of using built-in Image Occlusion – Adding/Editing - Anki Manual ?

Yes, there is.

The “Type” field does not offer any other Image Occlusion but the Enhanced add on.

It looks like you deleted your “Image Occlusion” (or whatever that would be localized) note type. You can re-add that by clicking Manage [or Manage Note Types] > Add > Add: Image Occlusion.

I understand that none of this “solves” the issue you were having with that IO Enhanced note, but if you create your notes with the built-in functionality, you won’t need to.

First, delve into standard occlusion to gain a good understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of custom add-ons. In any case, a standard solution should be supported for years, while an add-on can be abandoned.
For example, I created an add-on that was essentially useless after its creation, since shading already works like regular HTML. https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/675107747
So it will likely serve people for a long time.
But you should try it after you’ve mastered the standard solution, and then evaluate whether you really need it or need something else.

Thank you very much for your quick and precise reply.

It works well with the integrated functionality.

there should be some recommendation against using this addon nowadays. it was relevant back in the days when there wasn’t a built-in image occlusion, but i see people who keep using it not knowing there’s a built-in option just because it’s in some old tutorials and running into issues very similar to our friend here, because this addon is now 4 years out of date.

That (Tutorials) was exactly the way I was following.

We don’t have any way to control what other guides/tutorials/users recommend.

The add-on is still relevant and necessary for anyone who already has IO Enhanced notes that need editing (even if they are newly importing those from a shared deck). There are other users who continue using it for new notes, because that’s what they are used to, or because it includes a feature they like. [I don’t think that this particular add-on being 4 years old necessarily means there is anything wrong with it.]

There’s no reason for a new user to start out creating new notes with it, and especially if it means they need to troubleshoot issues. But that is naturally discouraged for anyone who spends time getting to know the app before they go looking for things to add to it – e.g. Getting Started - Anki Manual .

I think the most anyone can do beyond that is help spread the word:

If it helps you to know, the sequence of events goes like this –

  • Image Occlusion [original] add-on →
  • Image Occlusion Enhanced add-on →
  • built-in Image Occlusion (coded by the same dev who made the add-ons)
