I want to ask how do you learn vocabulary by reading books with Anki? After I finish reading a book, I will have a large number of new vocabulary to learn from. However, it will be impossible for me to create it and learn it in a short time. So how do you guys manage to learn these words? Do you use any add-ons to help you?
Yes, you can automate the process using plugins and third-party tools.
If you’re reading physical books it’s harder to do that. But you’ll find add-ons that help you in that case too (forvo downloader, for example).
You don’t have to learn everything. I would suggest suspending cards that are leech or are very rare. You can always return to them when you’re more advanced.
I have this paranoia regarding words I encounter that I always try to add them to Anki no matter what (there’s a FOMO-like thing). But I think one should avoid that and just read even when not reading intensively. You’re not missing out on some super useful but rare word by simply doing extensive reading.
Sounds like something like sentence mining might work in your case, no? When you come across a sentence or short passage you don’t fully understand, for example because you didn’t know a word or idiom etc. then just make a card with the full sentence on the front. On the back you can put something like the definition of the word that you didn’t know, or even just keep it empty. When reviewing, grade yourself on whether you are still able to understand the sentence or not.
Reading e-books where you can copy/paste makes creating such cards relatively painless. I often read on my phone/tablet, create new cards while reading by just copy-pasting the sentence. Later I sync the deck and will make the cards a little bit nicer on the desktop, but it’s quite quick as I don’t need to manually type anything. So yes I would advice against physical books (as long as time is an issue for you).
Also drop the paranoia/FOMO. Unless you’re reading scriptures in super rare languages, there is always more and more high quality text to read and all words, idioms, grammar you will encounter again sooner or later as long as keep doing what you’re already doing. You can’t 100 % a language anyway, but what’s important is that you keep on learning new things at a good pace every day. Doesn’t matter so much what they are exactly as long as they are new to you and you keep improving. just my 2c
