How to set up Anki for sporadic study?

I want to use Anki when I feel like it—sometimes every day, sometimes every few days, and sometimes only once in a week.

However, I don’t want to have cards accumulate, of which I then need to spend time constantly catching up (making studying unpleasant, and in the end likely resulting in giving up on my cards).

How can you set up Anki so that you can study—sometimes every day, sometimes every few days, and sometimes only once in a week—without cards accumulating, and not having to play catch-up?

Unfortunately, that’s not how SRS works:

If your time is limited and you would still like to take advantage of SRS, just use a conservative “New cards a day” setting, or even better (assuming your using scheduler V3) set the “max review/day” as you wish, and Anki won’t introduce new cards if your daily review limit has been reached.

Alternatively, you can use Anki in “cramming” mode using exclusively filtered decks, just make sure the " reschedule cards based on my answer" option is deactivated.
