Help understanding how to reset, review, and rebuild decks

Hi. Sorry if this question has been asked before, but for the longest time I’ve been confused on how to properly reset a studied deck. I’ve used the rebuild option, but it only seems to be the once…? I don’t appear to get any cards up for review again when I load the app up. They’ve become filtered, so I’m not able to use Custom Study. I’m not sure what I need to do about that though. I’ve tried playing around with the various options, but it’s only confusing me more. And I’ve tried going through the documentation, but…
I basically want the cards/decks to renew each day, so I can re-test my memory as and when I load the app. I’m not sure what else to add that I’ve tried etc. I just need some guidance on how to set things up. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks

You mentioned “Reset” – but it doesn’t sound like you’re talking about resetting the study history on cards, right? Reset (called “Forget” in earlier version) – Browsing - Anki Manual – turns a card back into a New card, so it will be introduced in the Learn state and go through learning steps as though you’ve never studied it before. That wouldn’t be something you do every day, because you want cards to build up study history so that the easier ones are scheduled at longer intervals

If you’re talking about Filtered/Custom Study decks – Filtered Decks - Anki Manual – those are for occasionally studying cards outside of their regular schedule or deck. [Custom Study is just a way to create a Filtered deck from a limited list of defaults.] Most of your studying will be done in your regular decks, so you wouldn’t really be using these every day either.

The link should explain a lot to you, but for some of your more specific questions –

  • If a card has been pulled into a Filtered deck, it isn’t available to study in any other deck. But once you finish studying a card in the Filtered deck, it will automatically return to its home deck.
  • You can choose whether to “reschedule based on” and have that extra study set a new due date for the cards when they return to their home deck – or whether to have it be like that extra study never happened.
  • You can Rebuild a Filtered deck as often as you want and it will pull together up to its limit of cards selected based on the filter and order you give it. But because it makes the card unavailable to study otherwise, the decks aren’t rebuilt automatically.

[Just in case you’re trying to study-every-card-every-day – that isn’t really how Anki is designed to work. It’s a spaced-repetition program, so make sure you understand what that means and why studying every card every day isn’t necessary – Anki's not showing me all my cards! - Anki FAQs .]

Thanks for the reply. Things are a bit hectic this end, so it might take me a bit of time to process everything and give a proper response.
