Help retrieving old deck from AnkiWeb please!

Hello!

I used Anki last in January 2023 for my finals revision, and I regularly synced it to AnkiWeb. I have recently lost all the files on my computer, and when I tried to restore my files from AnkiWeb I could only get old files from 2022. Is it possible to retrieve my deck from Jan 2023? @dae would you be able to help please?

Thank you so much!

If it’s the same account, and the most recent things were from 2022, a recent server-side backup would probably be the same as what you have now.

  • Are you sure you weren’t syncing with a different AnkiWeb account in 2023?
  • Did you sync with any other devices that you could restore from?
  • Does “recently lost all the files on my computer” mean catastrophic hardware failure? Or something else?
  • Did your computer back up important files to a cloud service?

What is a recent server-side backup?
I’m not sure if I was syncing with a different AnkiWeb account in 2023 - I’ve tried all my email addresses and only one of them is linked to AnkiWeb, which shows me the old files
No I didn’t sync with any other devices
My computer stopped working completely, so I took it to Curry’s and they did a hard reset.
Unfortunately none of it is on a cloud service

That seemed to be what you were pinging Dae to ask for – and it would be the only thing besides your current collection on AnkiWeb that he might have access to. But even when that’s available, it is only effective to roll back a very recent error – like deleting something locally, and then accidentally syncing that change to AnkiWeb. It would return you to a version of your collection from a few days ago, not from 18m ago.

The possibilities when you sync/download from AnkiWeb are generally that it can give you (1) whatever you last synced to it, or (2) nothing. You don’t say how you’re able to tell this collection is outdated from where you were in Jan 2023 – or how outdated it is.

Is it possible that this is the most recent version of your collection that you actually synced? In your last stages of study before your finals, perhaps you were focused on that and not on syncing every day.
