Help! I may lose my data

I normally use my laptop for Anki. It has water damage, so I went onto my iPad to use it (i haven’t used it since 10/2024 for Anki) and I hit “upload.” Once that went through, I realized that I should’ve hit download, but it’s too late now. I’m nervous that I may lose all of my data that was saved on the Anki app on my laptop, what should I do?

I always sync from my laptop, but I think I may have lost all my data by hitting upload on my iPad.

Is there a way that I can undo the “upload” and get back my data from my laptop?

I’m looking at your account now. Are you certain this is the same AnkiWeb account you have been regularly syncing your laptop with? I’m only seeing 2 backups – with a big gap between them. If this account was in regular use, I’d expect to see more.

There’s a old backup from Oct 2024, which I suspect you don’t want, because it’s probably around the same time when you stopped using your iPad.

The most recent backup is from today (or yesterday, depending on where you are), 2025-01-18 at 21:54 UTC (see converter), which was just over 3 hours ago. But I don’t know if that was before or after you mis-sync – so it’s either very lucky or more bad news.

Please confirm if you want me to restore that to your account.

There is an option to force sync in one direction on next sync which allows you to basically choose whether to keep the data on this device and make the cloud data the same as the one on this device or the other way around. But if it happens to be the case that the syncing already occurred on your laptop as Danika said, this wouldn’t be useful. If you’re completely sure about the time that your laptop last synced, you could go ahead with this. Create a backup just in case.

Good afternoon, I managed to salvage my data! I was able to upload and save everything. I had to get a new laptop though, what are the steps that I need to take to redownload Anki and make the new laptop my main device while still keeping all of my current data?

And please do not force sync anything, all is good !

Oh wait I see you responded on Reddit, thank you! All is good

Thank you for the update! I’m glad you were able to get things straightened out.
